As long as design doesn’t break functionality or speed… for this one in particular, it had better not slow down or do anything different in how it executes the command!

@kaidja Perhaps it's not important to you, but there are people who would like all of Windows to have a modern design

I've used @backblaze for over ten years and today finally I needed a restore after my external hard drive just stopped working. Quick and easy process!

When I first started at @Microsoft I worked on the Windows Setup team (OOBE, Windows PE, etc.) and to this day I find the tricks I know from that time useful (just used SHIFT+F10 and Diskpart to clean off a pesky Bitlocker volume the Windows installer refused to touch).

@valyala More common is you need your service to stay up while restarting it for upgrade or host maintenance. HA might also compensate for rare software bugs (yours or a dependency).

Next time when you decide creating high availability scheme for some service because of fear that hardware servers are unreliable, ask yourself why you rely on a single smartphone? Failure rate for smartphones is much higher than the failure rate for typical hardware servers.

Tried to link a large modern C++ service; apparently 32 GiB RAM / generic NVME / 16 core is not nearly good enough it took like 4 hours with retries on OOM what is wrong with this toolchain 💀

@DefectiveBecca @ghhughes I would hope so, but I can’t find anything public about this exception. Much clearer to just hear the whole practice is ending which is now quite public.

@JasonThorsness @ghhughes Products that are ingested or topical have been ineligible for commingling since 2013. Buying them on Amazon will be no safer because of this change.

Amazon is ending all inventory commingling as of March 31, 2026. This will reduce your chance of getting counterfeits from Amazon when buying from a reliable seller. In the past 3d party sellers would wherehouse products with Amazon for fulfilment, but amazon would treat all of the products with the same SKU as being interchangeable, no matter who sent them in. So you'd get other sellers inventory sent to you if it was in a closer warehouse, meaning you could order from a good seller but get counterfeit products sent in by a shady one, and Amazon wouldn't even tell you that they did a switcheroo. This change is important for safely buying genuine products, such as 3M respirators. sellercentral.amazon.com/seller-forums/…

I spent $2.80 on claude to have it modify an openscad script to add hexagon holes The idea was it would save $$ on filament, which ended up being 25 cents

@valyala But doesn’t Linux have some drivers that better utilize the hardware than the generic ones in unikernels?

The networking performance of Unikernels is usually much higher comparing to Linux or any other operating system with the separation of address space between the operating system and the application. The reason is that Unikernels have no syscall overhead related to the switch of address space. Syscalls in Unikernels are regular function calls.

I bet many of you aren't aware of Unikernels. They allow running services on virtual machines at popular cloud hosters (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.) without operating system overhead. This provides the following benefits: - Reduced usage of CPU and RAM (aka higher performance) - Improved security The following tutorial for Unikernels from iximiuz Labs is easy to read and follow! P.S. it would be great to see a similar tutorial for @nanovms
Ivan Velichko@iximiuz

Hands-On Introduction to Unikernels 🛠️ Containers, VMs, microVMs, and Unikernels are all isolated execution environments. But some are better for one class of use cases, while others are better for another. VMs are the heaviest (need more space, and take longer time to start up), but they are also the most versatile. Containers are probably the fastest and most handy, but their isolation is the weakest, and their applicability is more limited. MicroVMs (e.g., Firecracker) take the niche between containers and VMs - faster than VMs and more isolated than containers, yet usually more limited than traditional VMs, and the tooling is much less handy than for traditional Linux containers. But what about Unikernels? Are they closer to VMs or containers? How hard or easy is it to create and run your own? And what niche do they take? You can learn all of it and more in the just-published hands-on intro to Unikernels by a debuting iximiuz Labs author, Antoine Cotten 👏 labs.iximiuz.com/tutorials/unik…

@JasonThorsness @Microsoft @Minecraft Had the exact same experience for my son. I too put in a support ticket with @MojangSupport and it's been a terrible experience. They have ghosted me after giving me a single generic answer, and their virtual agent is a useless bot that just spams file a ticket. It's been days.

Years later and @Microsoft integration with @Minecraft is still flaky. I've tried twice now to buy a Realm and the transaction goes through then... it never shows up in the game. This time instead of asking for a refund I filed a support ticket with Minecraft Support; we'll see.
