@Tinky47flat I remember a race in which he came off the pace to run down a very good horse named honest pleasure .He appeared hopelessly beaten in that race and just got up by a nose

‡ Forego's Remarkable Versatility As one of the best known, and arguably best horses to have been ushered into the American racing Hall of Fame, Forego's accomplishments were remarkable in numerous respects. The gelding compiled a record of 57 34-9-7, and raced into his 8yo season. He famously overcame numerous infirmities, not least of which being his ankles, which bore the brunt of his massive frame. His remarkably long career can, aside from his reproductive status, be attributed in large part to the management of his trainers, Sherrill Ward and Frank Whitely, and sensitive riders, notably Pete Anderson, Heliodoro Gustines, and Willie Shoemaker. Forego won major stakes from 7f. to 2 miles, and, excluding his final start at age 8, in which his physical issues finally proved too much to bear, he won 10 of 17 Grade I races from 9.5f. to 2 miles. In the six in which he was beaten, these were the results: age / weight / place (margin) / winner (weight) 7 / 137 / 2nd (11) / Great Contractor (112) 7 / 138 / 2nd (nk) / Quiet Little Table (114) 6 / 136 / 3rd (1) / Hatchet Man (112) 6 / 134 / 2nd (ns) / Foolish Pleasure (125) 5 / 129 / 2nd (hd) / Wajima (119) 4 / 131 / 3rd (1.5) / True Knight (127) 3 / 126 / 4th (11) / Secretariat (126) Spotting very good horses from 10 to 25 pounds over long distances, while lugging in excess of 130, was a frequent occurrence in Forego's career. It is that extraordinary weight-carrying ability that sets him apart from many other great horses, and also illuminates what a sad joke contemporary American handicap races have become. It is understandable that many associate Forego with his victories in races such as the Metropolitan Mile, Widener, Suburban, Jockey Club Gold Cup, and Brooklyn, all handicap races that tested top horses in a manner that has largely been lost. But he was exceptionally versatile, which leads to the title of this post. In Forego's debut, a 7f. MSW at Hialeah in January of his 3yo season, he was "given" a race, which is to say that it was designed by his connections to be a foundational, and educational experience. Winning was not on the agenda, as evidenced by his 10/1 odds. He was "bumped" at some stage, according to the DRF, but his rider Pete Anderson gave him a good schooling, and he finished fourth, beaten 7 lengths by another good horse, Buffalo Lark. He was wheeled back in nine days, and won a 6f. MSW at the same track by 8, in 1:10 2/5, at odds of 6/5. Excluding his debut, Forego won 10 of 14 starts sprinting. Three of his four losses came at age three, when, as a classic later-developing type, his body was a shell of what it would later become. Despite that, in March he contested the 7f. Hutcheson (Gr. III) at Gulfstream, was "away sluggishly", yet finished 2nd, beaten 3 1/4 lengths by that year's Champion sprinter Shecky Greene (equaled track record 1:20 4/5). The next time that he contested a Graded sprint race was in May of 1974, in the 7f. Carter Hcp. at Belmont. Saddled with 129lbs. off of a string of victories in important longer races, Forego rallied from last to win going away by by 2 1/4 lengths. According to the DRF chart callers, he won "easily", which takes on further significance when noting that Mr. Prospector finished second, and was in receipt of 5lbs. Roughly five weeks later, Forego was assigned 132lbs. in the 7f. Nassau County Hcp., and came up a half-length short of Timeless Moment, which was in receipt of 20lbs. In the fall of that four-year-old campaign, he won Vosburgh Hcp. (Gr. II) "ridden out" by 3 1/2 lengths, in 1:21 3. He carried 131lbs., and spotted the runner-up, Stop the Music 13lbs. Exactly three weeks later he won the (then) 2 mile Gr. I Jockey Club Gold Cup by 2 1/2 lengths, capping an extraordinary season. Forego was awarded triple Championship honors in 1974 – Older Male Horse, Horse of the Year, and Champion Sprinter! Though he continued to race primarily over longer distances, he won the remaining four sprints that he contested, all over 7f. These were the results: • at five: Carter Hcp. (Gr. II) by a head; 1:21 3/5; carried 134lbs. (Stop the Music 123) • at six allowance at Belmont; 1:22; carried 126lbs (Wishing Stone 119) • at seven allowance at Belmont; 1:22 4/5; carried 122lbs (Dance Spell 114) • at eight allowance at Belmont; 1:21 3/5; carried 122lbs (Dr. Patches 122) Note that in that final sprint, and as an 8yo, Forego beat a very good horse in Dr. Patches (won the Vosburgh later that year), and did so "ridden out" by only a neck. That is not only revealing of the great gelding's ability, class, heart, and "nose for the wire", but also the skill and sensitivity of one of greatest jockey's ever to wear a set of silks.

@TheKuhnerReport Disagree. No legit center to contain Embid and their best player out! That said, they didn't pass the ball....bad shot after bad shot. Yes....coach should have stopped it!

The Celtics' Game 7 performance against the Sixers was lethargic, uninspired & pathetic. Boston was a top team in the East & a contender to make the finals. Let’s be honest: If head coach Joe Mazzulla was white he’d be fired – no questions asked. He’s a bad coach. FIRE HIS ASS!

Having now watched the Derby replay a few times, I’m a little confused how the race melted down so much on the front end when the pace wasn’t really that hot by Derby standards.

@ScottyPonX Chamberlain belongs much higher but at least u have him on the list and its egregious to leave Jerry west off he was a much better basketball player player than bob cousy although Cousy definitely had his niche

My last post on the Derby: Women have ALWAYS been a big part of racing. Sue Alpers, Sally Bailie,Sarah Lundy, Jeanine Sehadi, Jena Antonucci, Linda Rice, etc Women have always been the best exercise riders and grooms. They have a special bond with horses. I’m glad @reredevaux won

Scratching “Great White” and letting a female trainer win for the first time. Has the Derby gone fully woke? More and more people are asking the question.

This is what you get with a 20 horse field (19 this year). Take it down to 14. There are not 20 legit contenders to win anyway. Just seems dangerous to me.
Ahmed Bin Suwayyid@A_S_Al_Mughairi

That’s why I said if @ljlmvel had been able to guide FURTHER ADO out to the clear outside lane—similar to the trip Golden Tempo got—then FURTHER ADO had a real shot to finish much closer up front. That was exactly my concern. Instead, John Velazquez got crowded, hit with pressure from behind, and squeezed from the left side, just like everyone can see. So the big question is: how much longer are we going to keep seeing these collisions, reckless moves, and careless riding every year at Churchill Downs? Owners spend serious money buying horses and paying training costs. Trainers work day and night getting them ready. Horseplayers put their own money on the line trying to cash tickets. Then one reckless jockey can destroy all of it in seconds. This nonsense needs to stop ✋️ @ChurchillDowns | @KentuckyDerby @bradcoxracing | @FanDuel_Racing #KyDerby | #KyDerby152
