So Gout Gout broke the World U20 record over 200m (subject to ratification obviously) and somehow the discourse has become about RACE (and heritage)? Read a comment that said โ€œit sucks for the real Australian who wonโ€™t be recognized for his 19.88s runโ€. Are ppl okay???

@MetaWire @dom_lucre Murphy's mother was/is Sri Lankan (& a very good 100-400m sprinter for Australia; & iiuc, for Sri Lanka before moving to Aus). He's 22 (23 in June). Big story is he's only the 6th person without African ancestry to go under 20 seconds. He's been to 3 senior World Champs already.

@dom_lucre Whatโ€™s the bigger story here? That Gout Gout ran 19.67 & is the new world record holder, or that a white boy- Aidan Murphy also beat Usain Boltโ€™s world record at 19.88.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸšจSTOLEN NEWS: The fastest man in the world Usain Bolt has just been surpassed by an 18-year-old sprinting prodigy named Gout Gout who has made history after clocking a 19.67 time in the 200m run, surpassing Usain Boltโ€™s 19.93s mark he set in 2004. I wasnโ€™t at this race so I had to steal this footage from the Australian Athletics Championships social media page to present it to all of you.

@JTedBell @MedcalfByESPN Gout ran 19.84 a yr ago this wk with a +2.2 wind. He's been under 20.0 at least one other time. Murphy is only 22. He's taken it easy-ish for 2-3 yrs. He ran 20.41 when he was 18 (the then Aus U20 record). He's fired up after a good 400m @ last year's World Champs. His 3rd Snr.

Also Aidan Murphy improvement is not that strange, but people will use it to fit the agenda. Heโ€™s been doing primarily 400โ€™s for the last two years, the 200โ€™s heโ€™s ran this year have been into heavy headwinds. Plus, this is the peak of the Australian season.

@randyjo93598077 @ImantsRStrautin @bigg_wildcat The supposed accounts about Jesus in the writings of Josephus (& Tacitus & Pliny the Younger) are all well-argued to be later Christian forgery-interpolations, ie. in full, not partial as many claim.

@nbchef42 @iamAtheistGirl There's no evidence whatsoever NT Jesus was ever anything other than a literary figure, a storybook character, albeit in a lot of narratives, including narratives based on or about earlier narratives

Why would the gospel authors use women as witnesses to an alleged empty tomb in their stories, rather than men? (My hypothesis is that the idea of Jesus being placed in a tomb at all was a literary invention of โ€œMark.โ€ Later gospels took the idea from Mark.)
Joel M. Curzon@JoelMCurzon

@hookskat I think that the reluctance to use women as characters in either Jewish or Greco-Roman literature has been overstated. They are often used as important characters. I can think of several good reasons for โ€œMarkโ€ to have used women to discover an empty tomb. (1) It was the . . 1/n

@GarveBrahman @JoelMCurzon * I presume you mean many component texts were edited & re-written via re-editing long after their first drafts were written. Though some, like Acts and the Pastoral epistles, +/- the catholic epistles, were probably written wholecloth or near wholecloth. x.com/i/status/20431โ€ฆ

@JimLittle1 @JoelMCurzon I think the NT was slowly compiled and edited long after being written. There were numerous sects inspired by Jesus Christ, but the โ€œorthodoxโ€ won. Early Christianity was likely extremely charismatic, and chaotic. It gradually developed into an organized religion.

The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus provides a specific date and political context for the death of James in Antiquities of the Jews (AD 62). During the "interregnum" (the gap between two Roman governors, Festus and Albinus), the High Priest Ananus had James, the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, stoned to death This isn't a "heroic trope." Josephus records it because the Jewish residents were so outraged by this illegal execution that they complained to King Agrippa, who then fired the High Priest. A "literary character" cannot cause the documented political downfall of a real-world Roman-appointed High Priest.

This kind of anti-christian propaganda can be incredibly damaging to people's faith if they don't see what's really going on and how deceptive it is. So let's take a deep breath and think about this. Firstly, you don't go to hell "for being an atheist." Atheists don't even exist, and you go to hell for sinning. All humans sin. We lie... cheat... steal... etc. We all fall short of God's perfect standard. That's why God made a way for us to still enter back into a relationship with Him, but that requires us to repent, to turn from sin. The problem is that not everyone chooses to accept God's grace, so they go to hell, which is what we all deserve anyway. You might not like that, but your opinion is irrelevant. Secondly, this meme treats repentance like a magic "get out of jail free" card. This is a caricature of Christianity and what it teaches. Repentance is about more than just saying "sorry God" right before you die. It's about genuinely turning your entire life around and dying to yourself. It's not a flippant thing like the meme suggests. Thirdly, the meme plays strongly on our intuition about justice, but where does justice come from? Atheists want to say that this isn't just, but according to who, them? It's all just subjective and arbitrary on their view. The problem here is that atheists are trying to do an internal critique and an external critique at the same time. This is pretty much all they do btw. If they were purely doing an internal critique they would never question the justice or fairness of God because on our worldview that doesn't make sense (God is perfect), but if they try to do an external critique and judge God from their worldview, they're standing on a foundation of nothing. They don't have anything solid they can appeal to that would justify this claim. So instead they try to do both at the same time and just hope no one notices.
