We learnt today, via comments made by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall to the BBC, that the government plans to trial job coaches visiting ‘seriously ill patients’ on mental health wards. (Thread - 1/4) bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

If there is nothing to hide within eating disorder services, I don’t know why the complaints procedure cannot be reviewed when we all know the current one isn’t fit for purpose.

The emails I am receiving after this call out are harrowing - how people with eating disorders are being treated is neglectful, harmful, dangerous and causing deaths. And the fact that @NHSEngland don’t think there is a problem and this isn’t a “national issue” is disgusting

If you have had your treatment for an eating disorder withdrawn in the last 2-3 years please email me on hopevirgo@hotmail.com Thank you!

This is something that I raise time and time again with @NHSEngland … their response 1. There is a complaints procedure to follow and 2. Local issues are not national ones … 2 disgraceful responses!

The lack of clinical accountability of community Eating Disorder Services is a national scandal. It is aiding the cover-up of unnecessary deaths of Eating Disorder patients which are not recorded as such. @HopeVirgo

🧵This thread gives some of the impossible paradoxes I have experienced when asking for help with an eating disorder. Can anyone add any others?

But the NHS HAS been broken lol. And it’s being continuously broken. Why are NHS management so worried about accepting that? Oh that’s right because they enabled it 👏🏽… 👏🏽… 👏🏽

@iDrSunny This has happened at Sheffield Eating Disorder service too. A inexperienced Psychiatrist was been appointed with zero prior ED experience. It is dangerous!

@HopeVirgo @NHSEngland There is no accountability. Complaints always side with the Trust because it’s the Trust investigating the complaint. They cover for each other and make sure notes make it clear that it’s not them! I would love to know who makes the final judgement.

Last week @NHSEngland said they had a complaints procedure for eating disorder services … I said it didn’t work… they said it was “the procedure they had developed” .. I argued back .. they stuck with the party line of “procedure” So can someone explain the below to me ..

@Katie_Bee86 @HopeVirgo Very similar experience with @SHSCFT and Sheffield ED service here over the last 18 months. Acknowledgement of failures, meeting after meeting to discuss issues, money wasted, yet absolutely ZERO accountability and ZERO alternatives to treatment.

@HopeVirgo I have this week (after 9 months!) finally received a response to complaints re my treatment, or lack of, from PALS - multiple failings in my "care" have finally been admitted to, yet no-one will be held to account&I have been told no alternative treatment will be offered 😞

The appalling treatment in eating disorder services is where we need people to be held accountable… on a call this week with NHSE we were explaining the state of eating disorder services and the rubbish complaints procedure that isn’t fit for outside only be met with …

What are your thoughts on this from a Sunday Times reader? It has a tempting appeal, but if the awful culture exists now without the serious consequences proposed, how bad could it get if we did this?
