@Kingsidney99 @joejangleson @traecrowder You act like it's a good thing that he declines his salary because taking it would mean accepting that he works for US and not the other way around. Instead he's getting paid billions by others who don't have the interests of the American public in mind.

@SkyeSharkie Right. Visual minimalism is what you go for when you have a product that doesn't need to shout at you visually to get the sale, like Studio Ghibli movies in Japan, for example (not my photo). Ironically that can make minimalism attention-getting in contrast until it's everywhere.

It's also why japan still looks like this, because people go outside, walk around and make purchasing decisions based on what grabs their attention. The spectacle of colorful outdoor facades, ads, costumed advertising callers, it's all only valuable to the companies if there are people outside to attract! The childhood you lament is gone because you stopped wandering around outside.

this is entirely the result in a shift in marketing. back in the day, people would wander around outside and look at things, so stores and restaurants had to be these big attention grabbing advertisements for themselves, people would literally only find them by spotting the colorful bullshit and being interested because people existed within the world. that meant crazy 3d billboards, giant animals on your McDonald's, bright colors everywhere. the point of change was Yelp, Google reviews, social media presence - all the colorful superstimulus moved into the internet, in crazy short form video commercials and colorful images - they didn't need to spend money on all that in person any more because no one was finding them like that any more, they began to find everything online. just think about it, when you want to go to a restaurant, you don't drive around and look at options, that's what people used to do! now you go online, where all the missing superstimulus colors are! they abandoned spending extra money on the locations because it was no longer accomplishing the thing it was always there for: marketing.

Consider also that less than 30 years separate the two operational airframes. We went from four-engine, airscrew, straight-wing, subsonic bombers with 10 crew, to a supersonic, dual-turbofanjet, swept-wing, single-seat, multirole fighter-bomber in under 3 decades. Men who flew as raw USAAF recruits in 1945, were still wearing the USAF uniform in 1974.

I will never recover from the size comparison of a B-17 FLIGHING Fortress and an F-15 EAGLE. Also, the empty weight of the B-17 is just 5,000 lbs more than the F-15 two-seater. Oh, and the payload capacity? For the B-17: up to 8k lbs For the F-15: up to 23k lbs Unreal.

@WDE2011 Hell, the last USAF operational B-29 flew in 1960. F-15 first test flight? 1972. Pretty amazing.

@JWhitebread1 @BradRTorgersen No, because absent genuinely disruptive technology never guaranteed to occur where and when you need it you're now dealing with a mature industry where the easy improvements have been made and the remaining ones possible become increasingly expensive for smaller and smaller gains

@asglidden @FrankPulpwriter @DaddyWarpig It requires some planning around/awareness of the terrain to use well (ex: for area denial, blocking off escape routes or protecting a vulnerable flank) for sure.

If you’re playing AD&D, this isn’t a problem. Stop trying to play the Magic-User like a fighter, focusing on direct damage, and start looking at the spells available to you because they’re supremely vicious even at Level 1. MU are lateral thinkers and support masters, not direct fire. Ponder THAT orb.

@theKageRyu @AlysssaHazel IDK, it's always been the same amount of meat as two cheeseburgers - less than a QPC, Whopper, Jumbo Jack, Dave's Single, Famous Star, etc. It's the smallest 'premium' burger on a major chain menu now. Wendy's was snarking "where's the beef" about the tiny patties in the mid-80s.

@AlysssaHazel 30 year ago the Big Mac was actually delicious, and large. I always prefered the whopper though. So what I'm saying is...you tried it 30 years too late.

@caseyphillips @sciaticant @cmclymer Oh, and if I HAD developed an *actual* expensive condition, there was another word that's come up again lately: rescission. Insurance cos or snivelling trumperatchiks, but either way it means "we're cheap dealbreakers in expensive suits who want you to die if it'll save a nickel"

@caseyphillips @sciaticant @cmclymer As the then-employee of a small business that didn't offer health insurance, I watched my individual insurance premiums quintuple in the years before Obamacare passed, and since by that point I had a pre-existing condition if I dropped that plan I wouldn't be able to get another.

"So, Democrats have three words for this: no fucking way. It's literally life or death. We will not let Republicans blow up our health care system." This is, hands down, the best comms work Chuck Schumer has done in YEARS. Surprisingly good.

@janky_future @Brink_Thinker My perspective on the 70s may be a little different because the sleepy beach/college town I grew up in was "the murder capitol of the world" for a while there with multiple active serial killers.

@janky_future @Brink_Thinker There WERE tho, we mostly just didn't know as many details because news reporting was more local and the threshold for blowing up a story into major national news was higher without 24 hours of cable news channel programming to fill.

@hardtruth2025 @NintenBoss64 @moultano Eh, I'm not whining. I'm mainly on android because I don't want to re-buy all the apps I use and learn a different UI unless I have to. Apple makes quality products, and I've liked the Macs I've owned over the years even if I'm mainly Win/Lin. They're just not an orgasm in a box.
