A lot realistic fantasy designs could be improved greatly by just removing the split gambeson skirt that always sticks out from under the armor It's better to put a maille skirt or brayette there in my opinion

Early XVth-century armor set. During the Hundred Years' War in the XVth century, the white cross of Saint Michael was indeed used by French troops, even with a red background, reminiscent of the English cross of Saint George, a red cross on a white background (such as the one of Saint-Andrew of the Burgundians). Of course, the background colors could vary considerably, but the color of the cross itself could not be changed in majority to avoid factions accidental deaths.
