@mumbocombo @policytensor Any re-entry vehicle is moving faster than the interceptor going for it on a terminal intercept, and is the principle reason terminal defense is so hard. You *could* build an interceptor that goes faster, see HIBEX and Sprint (100g acceleration, Mach 10+!)... that's impractical

@LTsarcasm @policytensor Yeah except the Fattah is doing it at far faster speeds than the interceptors trying to hit it

I’m sorry? Iran has more advanced missiles than the US. It has hypersonic missiles and missiles with terminal maneuvering with a second motor, neither of which has yet been mastered by the US. Get your head out of your ass.

The funny thing is that this is true: Chinese technology (satellites) has, for all we know, enabled a broke third tier power with *relatively* primitive standoff munitions to force the US to abandon military bases in the radius of ~500 kilometers. Feeling confident in East Asia?

@mumbocombo @policytensor Maneuvering is not the same thing as an HGV. Iskander, ATACMS, Pershing II, plenty more quasiballistic missiles with MaRV.

@LTsarcasm @policytensor Man if only we didn't have footage of Iranian missiles manuvering against interceptors. The Fattah-1 and Fattah-2 are true hypersonics.

@policytensor ? Fattah-2 exists as a mockup. It's not been fired once this war. Fattah-1 is a conventional guided quasiballistic.

@policytensor Now yes, any ballistic or quasiballistic missile is technically hypersonic in re-entry. So was the V-2 in WW2. It's not a lie, just misleading marketing. As to powered second stage, US stuff is either quite old or instead using more-efficient attitude control motors.

@policytensor This is an absurd take, I've mocked US procurement forever - but Iranian "hypersonics" are just ballistics They have not fielded a first-generation HGV let alone a HACM A lot of weapons manufacturers have been labeling quasiballistic missiles as "hypersonic" - Iran is not alone

@Osinttechnical Pretty sure there's no actual mines there - ships have sailed that route. It's also conveniently the farthest point from the Iranian coast / where they are the weakest. I'd bet money is this a bluff to make ships follow routes they can interdict.

Iran has been unable to open Hormuz to more shipping traffic, partially because it cannot locate all of the naval mines it laid in the strait -NYT

Here's the map, BTW. At least 5 vessels have hugged the Omani coast right through there. Note how it's also the area furthest from the Iranian coastline they are claiming. AKA where Iran has the most struggles attacking or even spotting ships. Totally a coincidence 🙄

Tokyo Morose@LTsarcasm

I'd like to add: there's no evidence of there being any mines at all - and the Iranian published map of 'mine danger' includes Omani waters that multiple ships have safely transited by the Musandam peninsula. This is just them stringing our dopes along.

@TheMachine7253 @FaytuksNetwork It's not as simple as Israeli Jews vs Arab Muslims - the GCC countries are mostly Sunni or Ibadi, who DO NOT MIX with Twelver Shia in Iran... who also aren't Arabs. Even in a world without Israel, the GCC and Iran would not be friends and would be frosty rivals at best.

@TheMachine7253 @FaytuksNetwork They have firm diplomatic agreements and attempting to eject our bases would be utter suicide. The entire oil economy and most tourism goes via USD and they would be instantly de-dollarized. And Iran isn't their friend, as much as a minority of the locals may be upset.

NEW: Refusing to ship Saudi and Emirati oil through the strait while it is under Iranian control—in a way, an informal oil embargo—would transfer the costs of this problem onto other nations, and force them to intervene, some Gulf officials calculate - WSJ

@TheMachine7253 @FaytuksNetwork They have gone out of their way to not defend those bases or otherwise join the war. It is not possible for them to just eject the bases without them going to war with us. So yes, they are maximally fence-sitting.

@LTsarcasm @FaytuksNetwork Fence sitting? The missiles hitting Iran have come from the US bases in their territories. They are firmly on the side of the Epstein usurpers.

@9M728 USN does triage by ship capability, so a 688i like Boise gets to wait behind the Ohios and Virginias. and with the growing backlog that slot just never existed.

@9M728 There's an enormous maintenance backlog and a good deal of ships that aren't really serviceable technically 'in service' to pump the numbers. Like the non-refurbished Ticos.
