Trae racks up assists because the ball is always in his hands — everything flows through him. He’s elite at reading defenses and creating shots off the dribble, so naturally the stats pile up. But that same usage can halt ball movement. When one player dominates the offense, others become spectators instead of playmakers. The rhythm stalls, spacing shrinks, and secondary creators (like Jalen or Dyson) don’t get real touches to develop flow. It’s not that Trae’s passing isn’t great — it’s that the system becomes predictable. You get assists, but you lose movement, unpredictability, and team rhythm.

The Hawks are a better defensive team without Trae - and the playmaking doesn’t drop off. With Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the defense actually has length, switchability, and effort. The ball still moves, everyone touches it, and the offense flows naturally. At this point, it might make sense to trade Trae for another projected top 5–8 pick to pair with the Pelicans’ pick we already own. Two lottery talents in this draft plus the new defensive identity? That’s a real foundation.
