Canada fought in Afghanistan. Two World Wars. Carney named that history directly and then said: the U.S. has changed and we must respond. He won a majority government. [...] Mais l'espoir n'est pas un plan et la nostalgie n'est pas une stratégie ». Le divorce est acté, la fracture est profonde et la rupture est totale. Il réagit de la bonne manière car un État entier ne peut pas juste attendre que l'orage passe en espérant que cela ira mieux plus tard, sans aucune garantie d'un retour à la normale et alors que les pots seront déjà cassés. Sans forcément « apprendre à danser sous la pluie » comme disait Sénèque, il est important de conserver le momentum et de multiplier les initiatives diplomatiques pour sortir le Canada de l'impasse états-unienne. C'est pour cela que Carney souhaite établir de nouveaux partenariats stratégiques, notamment avec l'Europe. Son air blasé traduit bien l'état d'esprit de l'exécutif canadien qui perdent leur meilleur allié pas parce qu'ils ont fait quelque chose de mal, mais parce qu'il est devenu lui-même totalement fou et instable. Cela oblige le pays à de profonds changements dans sa politique étrangère, économique et, notamment, sécuritaire.
