"It is possible to mean well, to be caring and kind, loving one's neighbour as oneself, yet to be complicit in the corruption and violence of social institutions." My article for the @NewStatesman on Gillian Rose, Auschwitz, and morality. newstatesman.com/ideas/2025/12/…

Gillian Rose passed away on this day 30 years ago, at age 48. "[Rose] showed that philosophy could combine a search for the truth with the quest for a meaningful life" - Martin Jay versobooks.com/blogs/authors/…

Well then, before we treat #Hospitality as a particular case, what about #Construction, whereas a sector, more businesses have shut. They will allow builders to stay in business and create much-needed homes. Many other sectors (in fact the majority) of them have faced increased wage costs, increased rents/mortgages & increased energy costs, so all have these pressures. I support wealth tax, but I would like that money to be spent on the health of the nation and social care first rather than supporting discretionary spending.

But @Max123fletcher if #VAT is cut on hospitality, is that an admission that the talented chefs in the industry are not adding value? So @Max123fletcher, you say it is not an individual tax, yet businesses DO not pay it; individuals do; it is a consumer (consumption) tax. So @Max123fletcher if it is cut for the #Hospitality sector are prices for consumers going to reduce, or are they going to stay the same to hide a price increase. So @Max123fletcher what happens next year when restaurants face increased wages, and increased rents, will they be asking for another cut in #vatechwabag And finally, @Max123fletcher if #VAT is cut in this sector, so the revenue to #HMRC @HMRC reduces, where is that shortfall going to be made up, more tax burden on those that can not afford to eat, let alone eat out
