This is one of approximately 30 sites in Brooklyn where tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews are partaking in a ritual slaughter of chickens before #yomkippur called #Kaporos. The vendors sell and slaughter the chickens on public streets in violation of multiple city health codes. They don't have permits for these ritual sites and pop-up slaughterhouses, yet the local NYPD precincts provide barricades, floodlights and security. At this #Kaporos site, hundreds of chickens were starving to death and cannibalizing each other in the crates right in front of the NYPD officers, who refused to intervene. When we asked one of the approximately 10 officers why they allowed these crimes to take place, he said, "You know the reason. Politics." Like his predecessors, @NYCMayor Eric Adams instructs NYPD precincts to help the practitioners break the law because they represent a large voting bloc. With #avianflu outbreaks that are increasingly affecting mammals, Kaporos is a ticking time bomb. In Brooklyn alone, an estimated 100,000 people, including children and the elderly, physically handle live birds, many of whom are visibly ill. Rescuers did manage to get a few of the chickens out.
