In Oregon, about 1 in 3 fourth graders scores below “basic” in math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. That means not only are those students falling behind their peers, but they aren’t able to perform tasks such as adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers or understanding place value – the foundational skills of arithmetic. These children are not abstractions. They are sitting in Oregon classrooms right now, and almost all of them will advance to the next grade regardless of whether they master these skills. That’s not the fault of students. It is the result of a state that has quietly dismantled academic accountability and produced outcomes that are anything but equitable. Since pandemic, education spending is up roughly 50%—and public education has collapsed. Oregon is now dead last in the nation for educational outcomes. Other cities and states have recovered—and surpassed—their pre-COVID performance. Portland hasn’t. So what changed after 2015? One word: DSA. This isn’t about funding. It’s about ideology. Socialists don’t believe in “enough.” Their politics require permanent grievance and endless redistribution. The middle and upper classes are there to be punished, not partnered with. “Mission accomplished” is not in the vocabulary. Their mission is eat the rich (those making $125k+) and only one demand: more. 40 years of crappy far left policy and single party rule has made Oregon into an educational and economic backwater. Socialists with delusions of competence: how exactly do you expect to achieve these goals? (Answer: you don’t have a plan—only fantasies.) With education collapsing and businesses fleeing, the only “help” left for struggling families will be a bigger tent or a bus ticket to a less ideologically bankrupt state. Real solutions: improve education. Adopt business-friendly policies that attract and grow companies, creating well-paying jobs for Oregonians with real skills. Tax responsibly. Use revenue wisely. Demand accountability. End the DEI and nonprofit grift. Restore civic order: focus on safety, cleanliness, and vibrant downtowns—not tents, RVs, and fear. Fully fund law enforcement. Repeal RCV. Evict koTAX. Evict JVP. Evict Angela Bonilla. Lower parking fees. Eliminate the bottle bill, SHS, and PS4A. Return PCEF funds to taxpayers. Elect moderates. Rinse and repeat.
