Beautiful May Day. A light breeze ruffling hedge & trees. Awoke to the sweet sound of a goldcrest singing in the garden apple tree (they nest in a nearby thick yew hedge so I see them frequently).

Sun setting over the sheep troughs. The first #cuckoo of the year calling down towards the river 🎶; such a lovely sound. I have cut some willow withies to make a May Day wreath. Never tried it before but how hard can it be? I am not hopeful but God loves a trier. ✨️

@cumbriaoldrural a knitted cat & a small hand sewn fabric owl. I still have them both. Treasured possessions.

@NetherfieldV2 Our Moonlight is still starting up from the winter. It was cold, windy and still is very dry in the northern part of the Netherlands. But we have this rose for more than 30 years now and she is beautiful 😍

Newly bloomimg #roses today - bushy Hybrid Musk 'Moonlight' (Pemberton, 1913) & 'Slater's Crimson China', a rather twiggy very old rose transported to Europe from China in 1792 by Gilbert Slater. Both repeat flowering 🌹

@fugitiveink yes, one & the same. Small crimson flowers; mine have a creamy white centre to them making them exquisitely beautiful. Flowers all summer until we get hard frosts. I have mine in a bed with Bengal Crimson (1792) & Grüss an Tepliz (Gerschwind, 1897) & Louis XIV (Guillot, 1859) 🌹

@TycjanC that's the fun isn't it? They could be any colour so it's lovely to wait in anticipation. Mine won't flower til next year but I have the lovely one in the photo that self-seeded itself.

@NetherfieldV2 I’ve got a couple of hollyhocks that have grown from seed and managed to survive the frozen wastes of winter and am wondering what colour they’re going to be, if they ever flower 😺

A beautiful start to the day. Mason bees buzzing in & out of the ironstone walls. Harold, the wood pigeon that lives in the garden apple tree is quietly cooing to his mate on her nest. He has no fear of me & sits on the wall watching as I plant out hollyhocks grown from seed

Have shared this collection of #tulips a few times - once more with feeling! They have been amazing - opening in bright sunshine then closing demurely overnight. Standing tall despite being buffeted by blustery winds, Blushing Lady, Mariette, Artist. Have a good day! #GardeningX

@Sharpr1966 @NetherfieldV2 Just watched the council spraying weed killer along the verges. Huge fires on Llanllwni where sky larks nest. Elan valley on fire, full of ground nesting birds. Great start to the day.

Walked to Reeth and watched the strimmer man killing all the dandelions. On the walk home a charm of goldfinches had found a tiny remaining patch of dandelion seed heads to feed on. Once you see how hell bent we are on destroying food chains you can’t unsee it.

Sunset with a hungry peacock hassling me for bedtime peanuts (of course he got them). A very blustery day ends with a clear sky & carpets of fallen blossom. The bats are out early too.

@NetherfieldV2 I love a rhododendron, we had 3 under our oak trees when we lived in Lancs. I've found 2 more roses after mowing the long grass so 38 & some narcissus have appeared

This is one of my lime-tolerant rhododendrons - Duftheke Yellow, flowering for the first time. It is a fragrant variety on INKHARO rootstock which was developed from a rhododendron found growing wild in a German lime quarry. So pretty & planted directly in my limestone-rich soil.

This Teign Harvey apple tree blew over last summer full of fruit. Far too heavy to move it lay on the ground until winter when it was righted. This spring down it came just as the leaves were beginning to open. 4 stakes & tree ties later it is still upright despite fierce gusts

That's the look on the face of the man who saved me from cutting dry sections of hawthorn hedge and suggested pizza instead. I have to admit it was very tempting, so we drove to the local pub and had pizza with pepperoni, red onion, bell pepper, peach and a lovely fresh salad.
