The driver shortage is real and the most common arguments against it actually prove its existence. The FreightX hive mind should use their powers of persuasion to commission a study to quantify the economic impact of raising the bar across the industry. Things like increasing enforcement, setting hard limits on vehicle and equipment OOS, issuing safety ratings on 100% of fleets, increasing insurance requirements, and possibly even nationalizing CDL training and issuance. I don't have a solid basis for this other an informed guess based on experience, but I suspect the impact would be in the range of 1-1.5m driver pulled off the roads. Possibly even higher depending on how high we raise the bar. This will force data-based conversations around the future of the industry and move us from rhetoric to results.

Effectively all growth in corn production over the last 20 years is for ethanol. ~20 million acres of conservation land, grassland, and soybean rotation was turned into corn monoculture that effectively strip mines the topsoil. Meanwhile it’s the most fertilizer dependent crop with only a 40% uptake rate. So ~1.7 million tons of nitrogen runoff flows into the Mississippi basin annually while also polluting their own water supplies. This runoff ends up expanding the Gulf deadzone, which is also where 40% of domestic seafood comes from. It’s hard to find a worse way to create fuel, with a wicked level of waste and downstream consequences.

@GordMagill Teamsters don’t need booths or handshakes. We prove it at 3am on the dock, on the picket line shutting terminals down, and in contracts we rip open for real pay & safe rigs. The only show that matters is the one where truckers get their due.
