New "Turkish"-run barbers popping up everywhere, yet half the chairs sit empty while ground rent on a typical high street unit is £25k–£40k a year — that’s £70–£110 a day just for rent. In my home town alone there are 14 barbers crammed into one street. Cars sit outside all day with random people pulling up, the driver running back and forwards into the barbers to drop off whatever they just received. This isn’t entrepreneurship. It’s organised crime using barbers as fronts for money laundering and worse. Anyone with eyes can see it.
