@NASA @NASAArtemis The Orientale Basin is a 930km wide impact crater on the far side of the Moon.. formed 3.8 billion years ago when an asteroid roughly 64km wide slammed into the lunar surface. It's the youngest and best preserved large impact basin on the Moon

History in the making In this new image from our @NASAArtemis II crew, you can see Orientale basin on the right edge of the lunar disk. This mission marks the first time the entire basin has been seen with human eyes.

@jamiemcln You actually can see human structures from space.. just not individual buildings. The ISS orbits at about 400km and astronauts can see cities as glowing patches, large reservoirs, highways, and deforestation patterns

The post isn't saying the sperm acts as an immune system, but that it carries the genetic blueprint for one. Eggs use chemical signals to favor sperm with specific HLA/MHC genes. This ensures the offspring inherits a diverse set of immune-defense genes, giving them a better 'match' for survival

@OffBayMedia @fascinatingonX Screening for the best immune system? How? The sperm cell has no immune system. It has lisossomes…

Researchers used a modified virus to deliver a working copy of the OTOF gene directly into the inner ear. This gene produces a protein called otoferlin which is essential for sending sound signals to the brain.. People born without it can't hear. One injection. Some patients went from completely deaf to hearing within a month

The egg screens for genetic compatibility but it's not a perfect system. Down syndrome occurs from a chromosomal error during cell division.. that happens before or during fertilization, not because of which sperm was selected. The selection process reduces certain risks but it can't catch every chromosomal error. No biological system is flawless

@luismbat when Apophis was first discovered in 2004 it briefly had a 2.7% chance of hitting Earth in 2029.. the highest impact probability ever recorded for a known asteroid. We only ruled out the impact risk in 2021

In 2029, Apophis, a ~370m asteroid, will pass just ~31,000 km from Earth. That’s ~1/10 the distance to the Moon. Inside the orbit of geostationary satellites. Visible to the naked eye. Impact risk this time is low, but the flyby could shift its future trajectory. A direct hit would mean a ~1 km crater and regional devastation. That’s why becoming multiplanetary matters.

@AISpout @LensScientific Yup.. Everything we consider 'advanced'.. our brains, muscles, nervous systems all evolved on top of mechanisms that single cells already had

@OffBayMedia @LensScientific This shows us something fundamental about nature. The nervous system muscles etc, develop from something that was there before

Love twitter so much Never thought I’d learn something new about our size representation on the map Tf???
OffBay Media@OffBayMedia

@Mochievous Africa is larger than the US, China, India and all of Europe combined. Most maps make it look smaller than Greenland. Greenland is actually 14x smaller than Africa. The reason? The Mercator projection.. a map designed in 1569 purely for naval navigation 1/2

something about this makes me so emotional. maybe it’s a childish, naive thought to have but to be living on planet 4.5 billion years old, a mere dot in the universe, we should be grateful to exist, but instead we are killing her because of greed and power

We see our home planet as a whole, lit up in spectacular blues and browns. A green aurora even lights up the atmosphere. That's us, together, watching as our astronauts make their journey to the Moon.

Did you know...In October 1903, the New York Times published an editorial titled "Flying Machines Which Do Not Fly"... confidently declaring that it would take humanity 1 to 10 million years to develop a working flying machine... Just 69 days later, on December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright proved them spectacularly wrong with the first powered, controlled flight at Kitty Hawk
