But if you watched a man stand there, visibly broken, resigning after less than two years in one of the most brutal jobs in the country, and felt nothing but glee, mockery or spite, that does not make you insightful. It makes you emotionally stunted. Some of you are so tribal, so nasty and so utterly lacking in grace that you watched a man being brought down in public and treated it as entertainment. You've just made the argument for me. The machinery is executing the revealed preferences of its operators. Exactly right. And who are the operators? The same people educated in the same universities, trained in the same law schools, appointed through the same civil service pipeline, formed by the same ideological consensus that has dominated British public life for thirty years. That is what institutional capture means. Not that the machinery is broken. Not that it's been hijacked from outside. But that the people inside it share a set of assumptions so deeply embedded they don't recognise them as assumptions at all. They call it the law. They call it fairness. They call it human rights. And then they block a democratically elected Home Secretary's flagship policy and describe it as doing their job. The system is not broken. It is working precisely as the people who built it intended. That is the problem.

People campaign, rightly, against the use of animals in drug testing, but it seems it is okay to conduct clinical trials on puberty blockers using 11 year children. This is Judge Eilidh MacDonald. She’s the judge who sentenced Joseph Wood, of Milton Drive in Buckie, to 3 years’ probation after Wood spent five years sexually abusing a little girl, starting when she was seven. He was found guilty of multiple sexual assaults at Inverness Sheriff’s Court, but MacDonald allowed him to walk away free, with just 200 hours of community service, three years’ supervised probation, and 3 years on the sex offender registry — two years less than Wood spent abusing his victim. Eilidh MacDonald obviously cannot be trusted to mete out appropriate punishment for crimes committed against children, or to take appropriate measures to protect the public from predators. She should be removed from the bench, and held accountable in some way when Joseph Wood molests another child.
