It comes from “fag-end,” an old term for the leftover end or scrap of something, especially a cigarette butt. The word was being used for cigarettes in Britain long before it became a slur in the US.

My wee mum passed away in her care home yesterday @0800 hrs. I nipped to my car for food, having been there for approx. 24 hours & the rascal died! 🫣🙏 87, & cared ABOUT ME for 61 years! Even when paralysed I cannot THANK the care home enough!!
