The youth were a prominent force at the Roadmap to COP29 #KeepYourPromise campaign, where they passionately advocated for the global North to be held accountable for their commitments to the Paris Agreement.

Experts are intensifying calls for the cancellation of unsustainable debt burdens that are crippling developing countries like Kenya. The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), through its Executive Director Dr. @mithika_mwenda, emphasizes that the current global financial architecture is unjust and reinforces climate vulnerability in the Global South. With developed nations responsible for the bulk of historical emissions, a recent ActionAid report estimates they owe African countries $36 trillion in climate debt. PACJA is championing reforms that push for grant-based climate finance, the restructuring of global economic governance, and a truly just transition. @KBCChannel1 Watch here 🔗 youtube.com/watch?v=7raXsI… @whiteband @OxfaminAfrica @ActionAid_Kenya @aacjinaction @ACTAlliance @ECA_OFFICIAL @_AfricanUnion @acsea_54 @AfricanAmdc @SDGsKenyaForum @christian_aid @PacjaU @RccdnRwanda @AESVTMAROC @cisonecc_malawi @RCC_RDC @pacjaci @CSDevNet1 @Abantufordev

🌍 Africa stands at a pivotal crossroads. As we launch the Africa segment of the #ClimateandEconomicJusticeCampaign, we do so with clarity of purpose and unity of vision. The intertwined crises of debt, climate breakdown, tax injustice, and systemic inequality are not isolated policy issues—they are existential challenges affecting the dignity and future of millions. This campaign calls for a radical shift away from extractive economic models toward systems rooted in justice, equity, and human rights. We demand debt cancellation, a just global financial architecture, and real climate finance that empowers communities rather than indebting them further. We are not asking for charity—we are demanding accountability. We are amplifying the voices of Africa and the Global South, asserting that the time for transactional politics is over. What we need is transformative solidarity. The fight for Climate and Economic Justice is not just for Africa. It is for all people everywhere committed to dismantling injustice and co-creating a more equitable world. 📢📢Let’s raise our voices. Let’s #PayUp. Let’s act—because justice delayed is justice denied. @whiteband @ECA_OFFICIAL @ECDPM @ActionAid_Kenya @aacjinaction @PacjaU @EnvDefenseFund @AfricaEuropeFdn @Oxfam @AFRODAD2011 @martgbek @BBCAfrica @cgtnafrica @NationAfrica @KenyaEditors @AlJazeera @The_EastAfrican 🔹 #EJCampaign 🔹 #EconomicJustice 🔹 #PACJA 🔹 #ClimateJustice 🔹 #AfricaWeWant

For the first time in history, the African Union has taken a bold step at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on behalf of 55 African countries making it clear that climate change is not just an environmental problem, but a human rights crisis. This moment is bigger than law! It’s about fairness. Africa contributes the least to climate change, yet we suffer the most. The AU’s message to the ICJ rooted in justice, equity, and the right to development, is a powerful reminder that the world must act differently. As climate justice defenders, we stand behind this call. The polluters must take responsibility. Reparations, real climate finance, and protection of future generations must no longer be negotiable. This morning in Kampala, we were invited for a meeting by the former Vice President of Uganda, who is also the Presidential Advisor of the Environment, H.E. Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, in his office in Kampala. PACJA agreed to collaborate with his office in rolling out forest restoration and livelihood improvement programs for communities impacted by climate change in Uganda.

Yesterday, we marked World Wetlands Day, a moment to reflect on wetlands' critical role in sustaining ecosystems, regulating water cycles, and supporting biodiversity. While we witnessed commendable activities across the region and the globe, the harsh reality remains: wetlands continue to face relentless degradation and are undervalued in development planning. 🔎 What We Have Observed: 🚧 The False Promise of Development: Infrastructure projects—roads, dams, urban sprawl—are destroying wetlands at an alarming rate. While these projects are often justified as progress, the long-term economic and environmental losses—flooding, water shortages, biodiversity decline—far outweigh the supposed benefits. 💧 Wetlands are nature’s lifeline. They store and purify water, act as natural flood barriers, and are home to diverse species. Yet, their destruction continues in the name of short-term economic gains. 🔔 It's time to change the narrative. Wetlands must be considered for climate adaptation, sustainable development, and biodiversity conservation efforts. Protecting them is not a choice—it’s a necessity for our future. #WorldWetlandsDay2025 #ProtectOurWetlands #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #Pacja #EconomicJustice

World Wetlands Day 2025: Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future Wetlands are the unsung heroes of our planet—absorbing carbon, regulating water cycles, and sustaining biodiversity. Yet, in just the last 50 years, human activities have destroyed over 35% of the world’s wetlands , threatening livelihoods, ecosystems, and climate resilience. As the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), we stand firm in advocating for protecting Africa’s wetlands as vital ecosystems in the fight for climate justice, sustainable development, and community resilience. Why Wetlands Matter for Africa 🌿 Climate Regulation – Wetlands act as natural carbon sinks, mitigating the impacts of climate change. 💧 Water Security – They purify and store water, reducing the risks of floods and droughts. 🐟 Livelihoods & Food Security – Millions of Africans rely on wetlands for fishing, agriculture, and tourism. 🦩 Biodiversity Hotspots – Wetlands support some of Africa’s most unique species, ensuring ecological balance. 🌍 Cultural & Indigenous Significance – Wetlands are deeply rooted in the traditions of many African communities, sustaining their way of life. Urgent Call to Action ✅ Strengthen policy enforcement to halt wetland destruction and unsustainable land-use practices. ✅ Amplify community-led conservation efforts that integrate indigenous knowledge with modern climate solutions. ✅ Secure climate finance to support wetland restoration, protecting ecosystems and frontline communities. ✅ Demand corporate and industrial accountability to stop pollution and land degradation in wetland areas. Africa’s Wetlands, Africa’s Future From the Okavango Delta in Botswana to the Sudd in South Sudan and the Niger Delta in Nigeria, Africa’s wetlands are lifelines for millions. This World Wetlands Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to protect, restore, and sustainably manage these critical ecosystems—for today and for future generations. 🔗 Join PACJA in calling for urgent action to safeguard wetlands for climate resilience and environmental justice! #WorldWetlandsDay2025  #ProtectWetlands #ClimateJustice #PACJA
