My first professional byline ran in The Washington Post sports section in May 1987, when I was a sophomore at @AmericanU. The lead is awful; the rest of the story was no better. The point is that this story ran in a section that -- as of today -- no longer exists. I still cannot get my head around that fact. So much talent passed through that department, and I learned so much from so many of them. I served as reporter, newsaide, copy editor, agate guy and composing room stooge and each of those experiences taught me something. (The composing room lesson was: Don't mess around with guys with Exacto knives). I did eight years there before taking a job across the river to launch a little experiment called washingtonpost.com. That worked out pretty well for me, but I'll never forget what I learned and who I learned it from in that thrilling circus located at 15th & L.
