LAGARDE REJECTS US STABLECOIN PLAYBOOK FOR EUROPE ECB President Christine @Lagarde pushed back against the case for euro-denominated stablecoins, arguing financial stability and monetary policy risks outweigh any benefit to the euro's international standing. Speaking at the Banco de España LatAm Economic Forum, Lagarde said deposit flight to stablecoins would weaken bank lending and undermine the ECB's interest rate transmission. She cited $USDC's depeg during the Silicon Valley Bank collapse as evidence of run risk. Her position breaks with Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel, who endorsed euro stablecoins in February, and with the European Commission and France. A consortium of 12 European banks called Qivalis is targeting a MiCA-regulated euro stablecoin launch in the second half of 2026. Lagarde pointed to the @ecb's own Pontes and Appia tokenized settlement projects as the right path forward. "The case for promoting euro-denominated stablecoins is far weaker than it appears," she said.
