Uttarakhand: Prioritizing child safety and public health, Health Secretary and Commissioner, Food Safety and Drug Administration, Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar has issued instructions to all District Magistrates and Chief Medical Officers across the state. In compliance with the advisory issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, on October 3, 2025, special emphasis is being placed on the rational use and distribution of cough syrups for children in the state. Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar stated that no type of cough or cold medication should be administered to children below two years of age. For children under five, the routine use of such medicines is not recommended. These should only be used on the advice of a specialist doctor, in the correct dosage, and for the minimum required duration. He added that in most cases, cough and cold in children resolve on their own, and therefore, unnecessary use of these medicines should be strictly avoided by doctors. The Health Secretary has directed all districts to ensure that drug inspectors collect cough syrup samples in a phased manner and have them tested in laboratories. This will help identify and immediately remove any substandard or harmful medicines from the market. He also instructed that all doctors and pharmacists must strictly comply with the central advisory.
