I’d say I’m surprised, but then again, this is the same party that rigs elections, assassinates political opponents, imports third-world savages, and lets our cities and culture burn. Today the New York Times is reporting that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is backing down on its mass detention center in Roxbury. That is a big win for public safety, for the township of Roxbury, and for New Jersey. DHS’s plans were always illegal: the Roxbury warehouse is a logistics center fit for packages, not thousands of people, and did nothing to make New Jersey safer. In fact, we told them it would have devastating impacts on the water and sewage systems, and compromise an environmentally sensitive area. That’s why we joined the town of Roxbury in court and stopped this detention center from moving forward in the first place. This isn’t a partisan issue and we're grateful for our partnership with the Roxbury community as we keep DHS’s feet to the fire to ensure this facility is never opened.

After being denied access for weeks, I was finally allowed into Delaney Hall – but what I received was a closely controlled and limited tour of the facility. That is unacceptable. I was not allowed to meet or speak directly with the detainees, which continues to raise serious questions about the real conditions of the facility and the treatment of those held there. I will continue to push to speak with the detainees directly. They deserve to be heard and the public deserves answers.

Trump’s immigration enforcement left a nearly-blind immigrant to die in the cold after releasing him in February, and continues to mistreat detainees with serious medical conditions in facilities like Delaney Hall.   This brazen new policy is designed solely to shield ICE from accountability for its cruelty.

I went to Delaney Hall to follow up on conversations I had this morning with family members of detainees. ICE and GEO Group did not let me speak with detainees. Why do they insist on hiding the truth even after getting almost $1 billion of tax dollars?
