@richrobscows1 @1stGenDairyFarm Would suggest grazing re growth is the cause of the MF. I pre set out bales of hay in our calving fields. Out wintering style & use ring feeders & mobile water troughs to move cows onto a fresh section every 48hrs. Back fence tight up behind. 230 calved last yr outside only 2 MF

@RodneyDown @HefinR @BakersofHP I suspect it’s a lot more than processors are prepared to pay. As it’s not purely a financial decision. Seasonal work load and job variation are big factors where owners are contributing significantly to labour plus the ability to attract good staff.

@HefinR @BakersofHP Level supply costs money! How much incentive is enough to make me go from autumn caving to all year round?

Yep, agreed, is there any downside to rewarding level production though?
rodney down@RodneyDown

@BakersofHP My autumn calvers will be yielding the same as any spring calves come April and may. It's a combination problem. We shouldn't just blame one sector.

I'm seeing some herds with heat detection collers and tail paint. Is there an advantage or reason for that?

@2pintpaddy Do you normally start this early Paddy? With the weather and cows not full time at grass. Plus your collars not working. Would you not wait a bit?

After 11 years working together, our Farm Manager is taking the next step and taking on his own farm. This leaves a great opportunity for an enthusiastic person with experience in managing cows, people and land to be part of something special at Bore Place boreplace.org/about-us/jobs

We reached the end of week six of calving last Thursday, we had calved 520 of the planned block of 650 cows and heifers so that puts us at 80% calved in six weeks. Pretty pleased with that, should set us up well to improve further next year #calving

Massive effort from a skeleton weekend team to get the maize sheeted up last night. Highlight of the day had to be HS2 security turning up to check we hadn’t stolen one of their loading shovels! 🙄
