Conceptually, EFM mirrors the inference procedure in Deep Equilibrium Models (@zicokolter @shaojieb) where a neural network is iterated to convergence at test time to find a fixed point. Two paths, one equilibrium. ⚖️

Both perspectives describe systems evolving toward the same equilibrium condition. EqM achieves this through explicit gradient descent on an energy landscape, whereas EFM accomplishes it by learning a fixed-point mapping instead.

I just read the Equilibrium Matching (EqM) paper; it’s excellent and insightful work! Interestingly, we recently published a related method called Adaptive Equilibrium Flow Matching (AEFM). Leaving out “adaptive” reveals strong conceptual parallels between the two approaches.
