The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has praised officials in the East London Management Area, Eastern Cape, after they successfully intercepted a cache of contraband before it could be smuggled into a correctional facility. The discovery was made during a routine security inspection conducted in the Agriculture Section as part of ongoing security measures under the department’s Stabilisation Plan. Before authorising daily activities, officials carried out a thorough search of the work area and uncovered prohibited items hidden outside a toilet facility. The contraband included 24 arms of dagga and 37 Mandrax tablets, which were immediately confiscated. DCS said the successful operation demonstrates the importance of strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the vigilance of correctional officials in preventing illicit substances from entering correctional centres. The department reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, secure and well-managed facilities that support rehabilitation efforts while contributing to safer communities. @DCS_ZA
