@karnatakakspcb Has your policy changed recently? When did the Jurisdiction for handling air and noise pollution complaints by commercial establishments in residential areas, shift to Electrical Inspectorate? @eshwar_khandre

A walk around Madipakkam Lake today offers a lush, green escape: a scenic pathway encircling brimming waters, shaded by native trees and plants that purify the air. Small islands in the lake attract a variety of birds, making it a haven for urban biodiversity. Along the paved paths, vendors selling healthy snacks and fresh vegetables have set up shop, a reflection of how environmental restoration can also support local livelihoods, particularly for low-income groups. citizenmatters.in/community-led-…

Barrier-free access, technology-based tools, textbooks in accessible formats such as large print and Braille: Chapter 6.11 of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, has many such infrastructural and technological provisions that schools should adopt to meet the needs of students with disabilities. While many Indian states such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have not yet implemented NEP, they are still bound by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act. citizenmatters.in/most-urban-sch…

The Shakti Yojane has recently crossed 500 crore tickets in the two years since it was launched by the Karnataka government in June 2023. The scheme offers free rides to women (including transwomen) in ordinary public buses, as long as they have a valid ID. Despite the milestone, the Shakti scheme has been at the forefront of political debate in the state. citizenmatters.in/shakti-scheme-… @CMofKarnataka @BMTC_BENGALURU @FriendsofBMTC @tarauk #AlliSerona

The Public Distribution System (PDS) in India is one of the world’s largest food security initiatives, covering approximately 800 million people. It provides free or subsidised food grains to over 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population. Yet, Rajendra Nagar, one of Bengaluru’s largest informal clusters with over 15,000 families living across a two-square-kilometre area, offers a stark example of how gaps in the Public Distribution System (PDS) leave thousands vulnerable. citizenmatters.in/missing-grains…

Walking into the Madras Literary Society (MLS) is like stepping into another era. The towering, multi-storey bookshelves hold more than 80,000 volumes, some of which are rare and priceless. Much of MLS’s charm lies in its organic and deep-rooted community engagement, and at the heart of it lies its ever-growing volunteer base. Individuals from all walks of life contribute to the preservation of books and the maintenance of the library. MLS is also seeing a surge in youth participation, with young volunteers now making up 10% of the total membership. MLS is more than just a library. It is a living, breathing institution, held together by the passion and commitment of its community. @MLS_Books @MadrasSociety citizenmatters.in/madras-literar…

Domestic workers face abuse, wage theft, and lack legal safeguards. A Supreme Court order now prompts the Centre to form a panel for a new law. In their judgement, Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan said: “…we seek to affirm this important livelihood that is available to so many women, which brings them one step closer to financial security and the accompanying independence. Our concerns instead lie with the non-regulation of this crucial labour sector, which often leads to the aforementioned malignant results.” citizenmatters.in/domestic-worke… @BAFBLR
