In view of the recent strain on LPG, the Bangalore Apartments’ Federation (BAF) revisited its collaboration with GAIL Gas Limited today. The discussion focused on exploring long-term solutions to support apartment communities, including better access to PNG and energy alternatives for BAF member apartments. *BAF Advisory to Apartment Associations – Responsible LPG Usage and Contingency Measures* youtu.be/4L_6CZRKedw?si… In view of recent concerns regarding LPG availability across parts of India, apartment communities are advised to adopt responsible consumption practices and prepare temporary alternatives wherever possible. While the Government and distributors are working to stabilize supply, collective action by urban residential communities can help prevent unnecessary pressure on the system. The following measures are recommended for apartment residents and management committees. 1. *Avoid Panic Booking or Stockpiling* Residents are strongly advised not to book multiple LPG cylinders unnecessarily. Panic booking creates artificial shortages in the distribution system and directly affects households that depend exclusively on LPG for daily cooking. 2. *Use Electricity as a Supplementary Cooking Option* Most apartment communities have stable electricity supply. Residents are encouraged to temporarily shift part of their cooking to electric appliances where feasible. Recommended appliances include: - Induction cooktops for boiling and everyday cooking * Electric pressure cookers for rice, lentils and curries * ⁠Air fryers or electric grills for frying and roasting Using electricity for even 30–40% of cooking activities can significantly reduce LPG consumption across the community. 3. *Community-Level Awareness by MCs* : Associations can play an important role by * Circulating LPG conservation tips to residents * ⁠Encouraging partial use of electric appliances * ⁠Advising residents not to hoard cylinders * ⁠Monitoring if multiple cylinders are being stored unsafely in flats * ⁠Simple awareness messages across apartment WhatsApp groups can help maintain responsible behaviour. 4. *Efficient LPG Usage Practices* Residents can extend cylinder life by adopting simple cooking habits: - Use pressure cookers wherever possible - ⁠Keep vessels covered while cooking - ⁠Use the correct burner size for utensils - ⁠Clean burners regularly for efficient flame - ⁠Avoid keeping the flame on unnecessarily These small steps can reduce LPG consumption by 15–20% in many households. 5. *Support for Vulnerable Households* : We have seen that hotels and restaurants are facing challenges in getting cooking gas supply. Given this, please regularly check with your support staff (household staff and Association staff ) that they are not facing day-to-day difficulties. Please support them tide over this situation. 6. *Stay Informed Through Official Channels* : Please rely only on official updates from LPG distributors and government agencies for supply-related information. Rumours on social media often trigger unnecessary panic booking. Apartment communities have historically played an important role in supporting responsible civic behaviour.
