These fucking southerners get decades of fiscal policy subsidising their transformation into a service economy whilst the rest of the country is left to rot and have the sheer arrogance to act like it was entirely off their own work
Charles Amos@mrcharlesamos

London and the South East already make a net fiscal contribution of £59bn. Burnham must not get away with reforming Council tax to increase this further. If Northerners want better public services they should pay for them themselves. My latest: cityam.com/london-homeown…

@BarryHavenhand @rcolvile Irrelevant, I'm talking the entire cohort. We cannot afford our current pension system based on our current tax intake; it's estimated the triple lock will bankrupt our pension system by as early as 2035. Pensioners will need to take a financial hit if the country is to survive

@Schilted @rcolvile I'm 72 and the income tax I pay exceeds the sum of my state pension, one size doesn't fit all

I try and stay out of it cause I think the entire thing is just petty but it's honestly kind of funny how many English people I've seen getting annoyed over people from Boston fawning over the Scottish fans and reacting less positively to the English fans; it's so silly

@Schilted LVT will take years to put into place and the government needs money now. They should still do it but it won’t solve the debt problem especially for local councils which is mostly about adult social care

The problem is that Labour promised not to raise tax and people expect them to make public services better and not to cut social spending and that’s just an impossible set of constraints and obvious to everyone before the last election
J.@_Wilsonpilled_

@leftinista He just wasn’t cut out for this. He would’ve made a good Foreign Secretary I think. Very concerned Burnham is going to walk down the exact same path as well

@_Wilsonpilled_ I don't think raising income tax is a real solution; I think mainly we need to be targeting the area where most of the UK's wealth is hoarded, property. It makes zero sense than a £10 million mansion pays the same council tax as a £500k house. Either LVT or a Property tax

I think the best course would be raising income tax, cutting social spending where applicable (rich pensioners, move long term unemployed off disability benefits and back to work etc.) and extremely aggressive supply side policies.

Rachel Reeves thought she was being soooooo clever when she scrapped the universal winter fuel payment. She thought the electorate would see it as showing Labour was prepared to make tough choices. But the British public were rightly repulsed, and she helped sink her government
Rachel Reeves@RachelReevesMP

From taking our party from the worst defeat in modern history, @Keir_Starmer turned it around and delivered a landslide majority just four years later.

@caibyy honestly part of the problem is the PM position is just a poisoned chalice atm Any serious change is going to involve cutting funding to pensioners, but they're highly political active and a very large percentage of the population.

In some ways I feel sorry for Starmer, he was put under and faced far more scrutiny than any of the previous Tory PMs faced for doing far less. But ultimately, this is his own doing. Good riddance and may the next PM be better.

A fundamentally broken system is going to produce fundamentally broken outcomes Starmer wasn't a cause, he was a symptom His inability to bring about true change was his downfall, and whoever is PM next will suffer the same fate if they too don't bring about the change needed

"Public ownership can't work" say the tired British commentators while pointing at publicly owned football stadiums in cities with municipally owned water and electricity networks having flown in to municipally owned airports.

@mykgu3 Pushed extremely transphobic policies, pushed extremely authoritarian surveillance laws, spent the first year of his massive majority essentially doing nothing, neutered the planning reform policies, etc There's a lot more I'd like to say but character limit 🥲

@muke10101 @HovoYeen I doubt that would have any effect. Scotland's left wing primarily either votes for the SNP or the Scottish Greens, who are an entirely separate party to the E&W Greens. Not to mention England has about 10x the population so losing the Scottish votes wouldn't matter much
