Surely a mass council house building programme could achieve the same result without the complications that would entail, unless I’ve misunderstood your argument

Does the British left, in its responses to Blair, see no need to reckon with the facts? On the best measure British income inequality is at its lowest since 1986; wealth inequality is also low by historical standards. Britain's problem is stagnation (and a housing shortage)

@thomasforth @ArchieHall It is absurd. It already has lots as a % of stock, and there is no plausible theory (other than if social supply drove overall supply) for why more would increase growth. A high social housing share is in fact an economic drag because it is inefficiently allocated vs the market

@Sambo_Italiano @ecurrnomics @ArchieHall I think that the best way to make housing affordable is to build a lot of it. And the best way to house people who can't afford housing once it's that cheap is to give them money to pay for that housing. There are some exceptions for people in tough circumstances but it's rare.

I read a thing earlier in the week. Burnham talking about intervening to get something built in Stockport. Yes. The state is needed to make stuff work. Only Jen and a few others know enough locally to make the connection to which scheme it was and note it was zero affordable.
