I've listened to plenty of lawyers and officials over the last few elections, and not once have back-up machines ever been mentioned. No-one on the ground is saying, "We're waiting for the back-up machines to be rolled out"...not one! @Ticcer @WallStreetApes They have backup machines on the sidelines. They just switch them out. Again, no one misses a vote and they do provide paper ballots if that situation can’t be cured in quick order. The system has evolved to compensate for the weakness of individual jurisdictions.

We don’t have a standardized methodology so you’re running 50+ elections simultaneously that are reconciled multiple times across the day from voter to statehouse to certification. We also cure ballots and allow for provisional voting.
