The Freedom Center near Northeast 23rd and Martin Luther King was the physical headquarters of the civil rights movement in Oklahoma City. By the time I took office as Mayor, the building was falling apart. Without intervention, demolition was going to become inevitable. Instead, we included its restoration in MAPS 4 in 2019, as well as the construction of the Clara Luper Civil Rights Center next door. Later, it was decided to restore the Freedom Center with private dollars, and so we focused MAPS 4’s resources exclusively on the Civil Rights Center. Meanwhile, the restoration work on the Freedom Center proceeded, and today it reopened. In the years ahead, especially after the Civil Rights Center opens, the Freedom Center will be a physical link to a vital story in our city’s history.

Today, our city mourns the loss of Mother Viola Fletcher - a survivor of one of the darkest chapters in our city’s history. Mother Fletcher endured more than anyone should, yet she spent her life lighting a path forward with purpose. 1/

Branden Carlson is one of 18 Thunder players who collectively won for OKC our first NBA Championship. All 18 will live forever in our city’s history & in our hearts. In recognition of this accomplishment, I hereby proclaim that today is Branden Carlson Day in Oklahoma City!

Urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s left a lot of vacant lots in downtown OKC, and part of our city’s renaissance has been the steady development of those opportunities. It’s always a pleasure when we take another vacant lot out of circulation. (1/2)

In the weeks since her murder, family members, friends, and volunteers have scoured the shores of Lake Michigan searching for her remaining body parts. Someone found an arm and a torso on a stretch of the beach last week. The day after their date, detectives found Robinson’s car in an alley, which had been set on fire. Soon after, authorities found several human remains belonging to Robinson at a Lake Michigan beach park. One of her body parts was also discovered a block from where her car was found.

My condolences go out to my little brother, Al B. Sure!, on the loss of his mother. Ms. Cassandra Brown was the light of his life, who raised a determined man in all walks of his life. Whether it was in music or health and economic equity or anything else he put his mind to, it was because of and for Ms. Brown. She will be dearly missed.

Tonight in Little Rock at the Clinton Presidential Center, a group of us from Oklahoma City shared our city’s story on a series of panels. We look forward to welcoming President Clinton back to OKC next week as we note the 30th anniversary of the Bombing. (1/2)

My wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl at 9:29 am Arizona time. Little Chloe Louise passed away at 9:45. I got to experience being a dad for 16 minutes. Chloe, your mom and dad love you so much. We'll see you up in heaven one day.
