@Shankaran5331 @SketchesbyBoze In the past, non-readers were forced to read more in school. This led to a number becoming readers. The remaining non-readers were also surrounded by more readers than currently. Conversation maybe higher? Might make the difference.

I’m torn on this. Throughout my career I’ve come across many people who have read very little while exhibiting wisdom and understanding in the most pressure filled situations. On the other hand, I’ve also been around highly educated folks. PhDs and graduate students who had read more literature, philosophy, and history than most will ever touch. Some had genuine depth and humility… but many didn’t. I don’t know if there’s a clear either/or answer here.

We’re not talking enough about the catastrophe that looms when the students who have never been asked to read a book grow up and become the adults who run our country.

The use of gender-transition drugs among adolescents in Oregon soared between 2016 and 2023, charting a nearly 10-fold increase among biological girls and a 14-fold increase in natal boys. Across this period, about 1 in 100 insured youth ages 8 to 17 in the Pacific Northwest state were diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a psychiatric condition involving distress stemming from a conflict between an individual’s natal sex and their gender identity. By age 17, about 1 in 240 insured natal girls were taking testosterone and about 1 in 630 natal boys were taking estrogen in Oregon. These figures are nearly three-fold higher for natal girls and nearly twice as high for natal boys as figures from a study published last year that analyzed national data on commercially insured youth from 2018 to 2022.

It is unfortunate that these protesters have chosen disruption over genuine intellectual engagement grounded in academic charity and rigour. In attempting to shame students into deplatforming these lectures, they manifest the antithesis of what a university stands for.

Due to escalating disruptive protests, I have decided to cancel the remainder of these lectures. This is deeply lamentable, but the disruption has undermined the academic nature of this series. Students shouldn't face bullying or harassment when attending academic events.
