The phrase is classical, and you are right that homo is typically gender neutral. But I used it: I wasn't quoting anyone (even though apparently Lewis & Short find Plautus using homo and mulier for man and woman, respectively, in the same sentence). As I am a modern, the usage is modern (actually, probably post-/meta-modern). It's actually a double entendre of sorts, "ad hominem" (in the sense that we're familiar as a fallacious rhetorical device) and "ad hominem" with it in the sense of "man," a meaning which was made unambiguous with the reference to femina/mulier. This was because earlier in the thread, the person either said I was not a man or that I was a woman—can't remember which. Either way, my response is actually loaded with entendres, because to interrupt an argument by saying that someone is not a man is ironically a misogynistic ad hominem itself. In this instance the gendered connotation of hominem that I drew out with the feminam reference is doubly ironic, given that no matter who makes an argument, their gender shouldn't matter to the substance of it. So you are right, hominem doesn't have to mean man. But in order for my whole layered, absurd response to land—and maybe I layered things too much, in fairness—ad hominem is more appropriate (and technically acceptable, with its intended two senses). "Ad virem" doesn't have the same ring to it, though I'm sure we could lampoon the original guy by using ad virem somehow if we wanted to make things even less ambiguous. On a historical note, despite how idealisticallg any Cicero may have put things, women really weren't considered citizens like men in the classical world. Leaving the question of whether a scenario in which an ad hominem against a woman in a formal or informal debate setting would be even plausible. But that's a separate discussion.
