I’m incredibly honored to have been sworn in yesterday to represent Texas’s 18th congressional district, and to have my wife Kaitlyn by my side. I stand on the incredible legacy built by this district, and today I’m ready to get to work.

Last week, I introduced my first bill in Congress. But from the moment I was sworn in, I’ve been proud to co-sponsor strong legislation from my colleagues, including bills that lower costs, support families, and improve lives. I’m going to keep fighting every day for the American people and the communities that sent me here.

Same reason we pay for roads that only some of us drive on, schools only some of us attend, and hospitals only some of us are treated at. Because our society is better when no one is left to starve to death.

Houston is home to some of the largest labor unions in the country. From my grandfather, a longshoreman, to my sister, a public-school teacher, unions are central to my family’s story. Happy International Workers' Day!

The SET Act creates a 180-day deadline for states to fill vacant House seats. My district, #TX18, went 334 days without a Representative because Texas’ governor delayed calling a special election. For nearly a year, hundreds of thousands of Houstonians had no voice in Congress.

I just filed my first bill in Congress: the Special Elections Timeliness Act, or the SET Act. It’s simple, common-sense, and long overdue. When a House seat becomes vacant, communities deserve their voice back quickly. Not months later.

Houston knows hurricanes and flooding all too well. But Donald Trump's budget proposal makes massive cuts to @NOAA , hurting our ability to be prepared for future storms. Cutting 1.6 billion dollars translates to families in TX-18 having less time to prepare for when a major storm hits. I'm going to fight this though, even Republicans can't justify this foolishness.

The Supreme Court just made it harder to challenge racist maps and easier to silence Black and Brown voters. We’ve seen what racial gerrymandering looks like in Texas, and we know exactly who gets hurt. Ban partisan gerrymandering. Restore voting rights protections. Keep fighting.

Housing costs up. Grocery prices up. People can’t pay their bills and are stressed about it. And the administration is focused on kissing up to the only person that matters in their world: Trump.
