Honestly, I now understand Chinese History at least 10% better in just one day even though I've been Chinese literally ALL MY LIFE (minus a few misbegotten years when I bought into the Taiwanese-not-Chinese brainworms.) And here's the Angelica Guarantee to You: If you read this thread illustrated with artifacts we saw at the museum today, you too will understand Chinese history at least 10% better, unless you started as a Chinese history buff. EVEN IF YOU ARE...I guarantee you'll learn something you didn't know before. China has a long history and we are going to meander all over it so its important to have a decoder ring so we don't get lost. We're going to divide China into 4 periods. It's deliberately oversimplified to keep you on track(ish). I can keep going! There are still so many treasures! But it's late and I'm getting tired and I feel like I fulfilled my pledge of getting you guys a boost in your Chinese history knowlege. Maybe later I will do a Taipology video with everything I learned on the tour. But I'll end with a note on a mystery solved for me. I've always wondered how that damned Jade Cabbage became the signature piece of the National Palace museum with so many other in the collection. That and the piece of rock shaped like meat. Well, the story goes back to 1925, when the Beijing's forbidden city palace was reopened as a museum after the end of the Qing dynasty as the National Palace museum during the ROC period of China. It wasn't until later that the collection was carted to Taiwan with Chiang's KMT. A rump dynasty. After walking through the museum you realize there's been many through China's long history. The people that thronged into the forbidden palace was fascinated by the jade cabbage and the meat shaped stone, both relatively low-value tchotchkes done by anonymous artisans compared to the priceless works of painting and calligraphy by old masters. Maybe it's because the strong contrast between the grandeur of the forbidden city and these exquisite yet quotidian objects. They were more approachable perhaps, and became the "hits" that everybody was raving about. Fast forward to today. The Jade cabbage and meat-shaped stone aren't in Taipei...they're on a world tour! Presented as the "National Treasure" of...Taiwan! Ah the ironies of history.
