Mostly tweet about climate change, geopolitics and socialism from a Chinese perspective. Dab on Chinese history and philosophy as well. Tweet to amuse myself.

China goes to US and throw down the climate gauntlet. "Rejoin Paris agreement. No more new fossil investment. 0 tariffs on all Chinese green tech, notably batteries, solar and EVs. Subsidize your own production, I don't care. Otherwise, indefinite ban on rare earths."

@AngelicaOung To be fair in US history, non-diplomacy is really the norm, at least after they clear out the mess of independence and become a somewhat powerful state. The more you read about US the more you find it more fucked up.

🎯 Remember how superior US military was in the 90s. Even then, Bill Clinton went to Shanghai and said the Three No's like a good boy. People have forgotten all about diplomacy and balance of power. This is why so much of the world has gone to shit.

hawks don't want to hear it but increasing cooperation between the USA and china is the most effective way to safeguard taiwanese sovereignty im not saying to pull troops and ships from the strait, but minimize saber-rattling and be as nice as possible

@HistorianZhang @CurtExplores Well if you get a local sim you need to register with your own name, and they can trace everything back to you just in case. That's what it's really for. The idea is that convenience and security goes hand in hand from the government POV.

@CurtExplores I mean, yes, you can, but it's also super annoying Plus, turns out all they need is a phone number to send a text message confirming you paid. I mean, just... Message me through the miniapp? Isn't that what it's for??? I can even see the status of my order

@kejimao What's the reason behind such defensiveness? Is it just a nationalistic thing, or there are deeper cultural currents or long-term China-India animosity?

Many years ago, I gave two presentations on how China builds its industrial and technological ecosystem—one for an Indian audience and one for a Vietnamese audience. Although the content was largely the same and went into many details that were rarely mentioned in other settings, the feedback from the Vietnamese and Indian participants was strikingly different. When I discussed the gaps between Vietnam and China, my Vietnamese friends listened very attentively to my analysis of Vietnam’s weaknesses. They even proactively acknowledged Vietnam’s deficiencies and asked me to analyze more specific issues in greater detail. However, when I compared China and India, many Indian friends became quite argumentative. They tried to compete with or challenge the Chinese perspective on almost every point, to the point where I could barely develop my analysis. As a result, they might have won the debate, but missed a valuable opportunity to have a meaningful exchange. So, I came to know which country would be the real winner for "China+1" many years beforehand.

@HPbasketball Also if everybody on Wolves is healthy, and they still steal game 1, this could be enough to beat the Spurs. People forgot how insanely tough it is to get past OKC (and now Spurs).

I really hate how when a team loses we relitigate everything. The Wolves gave up a bunch of picks for Rudy and he had a bad Game 6 against a better team. They traded KAT because of the CBA for Randle and he had a bad series. They made two WCFs and got to the second round, for a team that has been a historical joke since KG in 2004, TWENTY years ago. They built a good team, they couldn't get it to put it together. It doesn't mean it wasn't worth it.

@AngelicaOung Much of our politics, at least the liberal kind, focus way too much on this pointless scoring. Politics isn't fandom.

@AngelicaOung It's stupid to focus on narratives anyway. The real issue is not what is said, but the balance of power, which in turn truly dictate what US will do. Trump can say something uplifting or depressing, but it doesn't really matter. Nothing has really changed out of this meeting.

@RambutanRed @gonglei89 @SomeSomething22 Is it verbal disagreement here? I think it comes down to this - whether one think what China does right now is fundamentally different from the USSR. I think the answer is yes.

Chibber discusses and points out problems which planning faced in the "AES" states of the 20th century, all of them fair -and relatively accurate- to make in a general context, but I find his concrete examples and exposition of knowledge lacking-

@AngelicaOung I don't think all of these people are delulu - at first. Many of them are more humanist than anything. Then social media comes. Most lack emotional discipline and a concrete worldview, with proper sociology and political economy, to defend themselves against the manipulation.

There’s nothing sadder than the Chinese dissidents who glommed onto Trump in 2018 as their Great White Hope for toppling the Chinese government and have been too delulu or sclerotic to update their priors ever since. A bunch of them including Cai Xia convinced themselves into thinking Trump is going to bring Jimmy Lai home. This is a screenshot from before the trip obviously. Cai Xia was recommended to me as the real deal by a friend who lived for many years in Shanghai. I used to listen to her podcast « Bu Ming bai » and thought it was pretty thoughtful. Alas, she got the Yellow MAGA brainworms. « Trump is already in Beijing, and the Trump-Xi meeting is capturing the world's attention. With the United States as the 'big brother' leading the defense of freedom and democracy, I believe Trump will make defending human rights one of the fundamental topics of the Trump-Xi talks. There are rumors that President Trump will bring Mr. Jimmy Lai back to Washington with him; I hope this expectation comes true! »

@gonglei89 @przidnt1 Absolutely. But frankly at this point I don't know what we should really add. Wemby is surreal and sometimes I don't really know how to complement such a player. We'll probably know after this OKC series. The common sense is a bigger, lengthier 4 but I am not entirely sure.

@przidnt1 A part of it is Wemby comes in blazing and teams somehow aren't ready for that every fucking time. And when he subs out opposing teams get settled, have a boost and claw back. But we need to do better. A lot is our off-shooting and off-ball stuff. Some mentality issue too imo.

@przidnt1 House money for me now. I would feel perfectly fine losing to OKC in our first year in the playoffs. And I suspect this matchup would come up again quite frequently in the next few years. Should be a great series regardless.

SAS basically only lost one game so far (other 2 Wembanyama got taken out or took himself out) and OKC has lost none so far. This is the cream of the crop of the conf, if not the league.

@HPbasketball I don't know why people ask these defensive forwards to do so many other stuff right in their first year. Why not just focus them on one thing i.e. shoot corner 3s? I wonder if the player themselves refuse to do it because they don't wanna be a role-player.
