Shaka Smart sends recruits a 26-page document before they ever visit campus. Here's how he defines culture and why it works. "We send them our culture doc. It's 26 pages that lays out who we want to be - who we strive every day to become." "Culture is simply how we act, interact, and respond. That's it." Culture isn't what you say - it's your behaviors and what you do when it counts. It's always changing based on what's happening. "You can have stuff up on the wall, but if it's just words on paper, it doesn't really matter. Our job is to bring it to life." "The most important component is the people in our room." It's always about the people. They define whether there is character, teamwork, and resilience on a daily basis. (🎥Marquette University)

Shaka Smart gave the simplest definition of culture I've ever heard. Just 3 actions that explain everything about how great teams operate. It sounds easy, but most teams never master it. Here's what he said and why it's so powerful: (📌Save for later)

If someone coached you the way coach your players, would you get better at your job? If your answer is YES —> Then who coaches you like that? If your answer is NO —> Then why do you coach like that?

ATHLETES: Protect your mindset. One of the fastest ways to lose confidence is to listen to outside voices that drive you to blame, complain, and make excuses.

Boss: “You arrived 10 minutes late.” Employee: “Yesterday I stayed late finishing that last-minute report.” Boss: “I understand… but rules are rules.” The next day, the employee arrived exactly on time. And at 5:00 p.m. sharp, shut down the computer. No extra emails. No work taken home. If punctuality is non-negotiable, then effort must have boundaries too. Recognition cannot be one-sided. When mistakes are highlighted but dedication is ignored, the real message becomes clear: “Do only what’s required. Nothing more.” Empathy costs nothing. The absence of it? That can cost you everything—especially your best people.

Anyone who discourages an athlete from playing multiple sports does not have that athletes best interests in mind. End of story.
