I flip flop between feeling excited about finishing, and the panic and despair of unemployment in the short term. Feeling like this PhD has blown the wind out of my sails and I just want to escape it all.

If you struggled or are currently struggling with your PhD. What is motivating/ pushing you to finish it? (For me, it was sunken cost. It feels like you have nothing to show for it if you don't get the title in the end)

Feeling super sad today. Feeling empty, disconnected, but sad. Feeling lonely. The worst part is that I can't bring myself to cry and release this. I feel blocked in this sad space.

I had a mid- level interview for a banking grad scheme this morning and it reminded me of how uninterested I am in that world. Selling-out seemed so un enticing. Need to get back onto those applications which are meaningful to me. #phdlife #AcademicChatter

@thephdstory On a lighter note. In the late 70's a PhD candidate at U of Calgary attended his defense and placed a case of beer at the back of the room. He passed and then the chair commented "Wasn't it a bit premature to bring the celebratory drinks"? /1

@ThePhDPlace I recall contacting a few more supervisors to have a further chat about their work, but decided to not go further because I didn't think the work was a good match for me.

@ThePhDPlace It seems to be different for applying to PhDs in the UK?! I applied to (only) 4, got offers from all of them (tho some without funding). Am sensing that the PhD candidate market is v different here compared to the US.

Anonymous question: How many rejections did you get before getting into your PhD program? I’m trying hard to get in somewhere but so far every place is rejecting me and it’s devastating.

i fully believe that a girls first encounter with misogyny happens as early as kindergarten-elementary school when the teacher sits her in between the badly behaved boys because her being forced to babysit them and suffer their behavior as well, matters more than her education
