And on today´s bizarre aviation occurrence... Past Tuesday (March 19), a Boeing 777-200 LR took off from Delhi bound for Vancouver, Canada. After four hours of flight, Chinese air traffic control reminded the pilots that this might not be the right aircraft for the route. Why? Because the agreement with Canadian authorities only authorised the Boeing 777-300ER to operate that service. A quick call back to base in Delhi confirmed that someone had been dozing off a bit more than they should have when the flight was planned. Result: the plane turned around and landed back at the departure point after 7 hours and 54 minutes of flying… to nowhere. Now, knowing that a B777 burns a modest 9 tonnes of fuel per hour… well, just do the maths. Of course, Air India blamed the usual “operational reasons” for the incident—especially at a time when fuel is getting more expensive by the day and starting to run short all over the world. The passengers, it seems, weren’t particularly convinced. I hint that someone will be invited to a "coffeeless meeting" with its boss after this mess up... ℹ️WS. Aviation
