@OliDugmore Wait for the summer’s football World Cup. I hope my cynicism is unfounded but the mooted mid-half “drinks breaks” to allow for extreme heat and humidity seem a little too convenient.

@bbculp @TrimesTeam 😂I was genuinely excited about that competition, all the way up to the first draw when it hit me like a shovel that all the match-ups were fixed.

PTO and World Triathlon strengthen ties for new 2027 Triathlon World Tour that sees introduction of T50 racing. Interview with PTO CEO Sam Renouf, including why he didn't resign after Dubai debacle. triathlete.com/culture/news/p…

@TrimesTeam But another 897 who finished the T100 as non-WC qualifiers. The numbers aren’t that low for year one However, potentially a lot of these athletes signed up before Ironman 70.3 Bahrain was announced late (266 men; 44 women) That could be a problem for one or both events in 2026

@Timheming 242 males for the t100, that’s crazy low for a ags grande finale.

@TrimesTeam Yes, and makes the Ironman model look even better. It’s hard to see why the Middle East invests in pro racing when it looks like this - lots of concrete and no fans. But as @kellydomara said to me: Take away the pros and you have just another mass participation event.

@Timheming Btw, so 1500 athletes and they are not on the course to see the pro races? It’s highlights exactly what’s wrong with our sport if it’s the case.

@TrimesTeam Friday is the first day of the weekend in Qatar, and the races were at a sociable hour. The numbers I sourced from the finishing list: sportstats.one/event/qatar-t1… Agree that in the past figures for fun runs in locations have been added that have the loosest of connections to T100.

@Timheming In the past, we have seen inflated numbers with 5k and 10k. If it’s really 1500 triathletes, it’s okay, but still far from being a world final for age-groupers. Also, in terms of pro races, the race was on a Friday morning! For an organisation that was supposed to revolutionise

@TrimesTeam Had this chat today. So few -if anyone - out for the pro races in Qatar on Friday, but I totalled circa 1,500 amateurs for today’s T100 & sprint races combined. I think that’s ok for a first time event. But will region attract growing numbers of participants from here?

@Timheming Well, it’s going to be like golf with Liv. We are going to have all these races in the quatar, Oman, abu, Dubai… where no one care about tri… again t100 has zero legacy, it has been a fail on every ag courses except London.

@Timheming @andrewwoodroffe Sure, I ve been in Toulouse 3 years ago, it was good (could be better), but didn ´t count this race, because it is not format like ITU or PTO races. But You re right, we can ad maybe also Kitzbuhl years ago, but it is not enough.

@TrimesTeam Could make that argument. Flipside is that World Triathlon needs help and PTO has proven it can bring in investment. The PTO cock-ups have been high profile, but clean them up, make age-group participation work, and the business plan works.

@Timheming I don’t know how to find any positive from this. So basically t100 has been over promising under delivering and world triathlon is like, ok take care of the only stable aspect of our sport…

@Ondej941010 @andrewwoodroffe Not entirely accurate. Hamburg & Leeds, Toulouse (Supertri), Kalmar & Tenby (Ironman) all well supported. Grand finals can do well depending on location, and qualifying age-groupers tend to be invested in watching. Kona has few spectators due to its location and course set-up.

@andrewwoodroffe @Timheming Andrew, there are no crowds in any triathlon events (except Roth and Kona). ITU races are absolutely tragic in last 20 years. ITU races since their beginning.

@RenaultAdv I think he could improve further, although don’t think the triathlon schedule allows on path to LA ‘28. Appreciate it sounds negative, but think it’d be unlikely enough to become a Major marathon contender anyway. The winner in Valencia was 2:02 - that’s a long way up the road.

Think this makes Alex the fastest bonafide triathlete of all-time (?) But worth noting how high level his running’s been from a young age & there’s been serious dedication to marathon specific work since end of 2024 triathlon season. Hopefully makes this result all the sweeter.

Alex Yee, Olympic triathlon champion and now the second-fastest British marathon runner of all time 👏 He sets the time in only his second marathon event with a seventh place finish in Valencia 😅

@mdshrp @Ondej941010 @TrimesTeam @t100triathlon Think London is WTCS next year. Age-group only for 100km. Might be better received, but rattling around Beckton is a tough sell as a bike leg. Be good if they could take the TV cameras down to Westminster.

@Ondej941010 @TrimesTeam @Timheming @t100triathlon Lots of really interesting and talented athletes! Looking forward to next year I feel like there will be a few “marquee” races other than World Champs that will have insane fields. Thinking Gold Coast T100, Oceanside, IM Frankfurt/Hamburg, Lake Placid, T100 London and Vancouver

Triathlon’s T100 World Tour was based on golf’s Race to Dubai. Presumably the year when Rory McIlroy shot a double bogey 7 on the 20th hole of the opening round.

@mdshrp @t100triathlon Maybe, but when it happens twice (unconnected really) and there are that many aggrieved athletes it suggests there’s more to it.

@Timheming Lots of chaos in today’s race. But honestly feels like the biggest issue was athletes not counting their laps… Obviously hard when a big scoreboard is telling you “go to finish” at 7/8 laps. Seems like @t100triathlon is taking unnecessary heat 🤷‍♂️

@TilburyDavis Unconfirmed yet, but suggestions that they might have been forced to complete an extra lap by officials. ie. blocking transition entrance. My guess that is what the protests centre on. It doesn't explain the run lap issue, but probably lessons to learn there as well.

@Timheming Were they forced to do extra lap by officials or just lost count?!…. Onus is ALWAYS on the athlete to ‘know the course’
