William Friedkin on Henri-Georges Clouzot's "'The Wages of Fear" (1953):
"I had seen 'The Wages of Fear' (1953) back in Chicago before I ever became a film director. I loved the film, as well as Clouzot’s other masterpiece, 'Diabolique' (1955). I came back to it about two or three years after I finished working on 'The Exorcist' (1973).
It then just occurred to me that 'The Wages of Fear' was kind of a timeless theme. It was about four strangers who didn’t like each other. They were all imprisoned by their own sins, and they had to either cooperate with one another in order to survive, or blow up. It seemed to me that that was a metaphor for the world at that time, and even more so now."
(William Friedkin's interview with Matthew Steigbigel, The Credits, 2013)
P.S: On this day, 73 years ago, 'The Wages of Fear' (1953) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, France.

In QLD, a police officer can say "choke this c*nt out" but a student can't wear a t-shirt that says "from the river to the sea".

Lidia Thorpe told to stop quoting the vile words of QLD cops who used a choke hold on Indigenous man Steven Nixon-McKellar who died in their custody. Cop: “choke this c*** out” Too vile for our parliament but not too vile for the standards of QLD police. #auspol

Dear Prime Minister: We Can Still Be Norway - Norway: $16,300 per citizen from oil and gas. Australia: $50. Beer drinkers pay more tax than our entire offshore gas industry. Treasury confirmed it in Senate estimates.
The minerals under our soil, the gas in our waters - these are not the property of BHP, Woodside or Japan-owned INPEX. They are ours. They are the commons.
And right now they are being extracted for next to nothing while ordinary Australians pay the price in energy bills, rent and HECS debt.
That $90 billion gap is free universities. Universal childcare. Dental care in Medicare. Renewable energy that cuts our power bills. Public housing.
This is not fantasy. This is what Norway bought with the money we are giving away.
The majority of Labor, Greens, One Nation and independent voters all support a proper gas tax. This is not a fringe idea. It is what Australians actually want.
The Senate numbers are there. The May budget is the moment.

@chris_kratovil It's a bit like Donald Trump dancing and you saying, wow, this guy is so cool - he has another side to him. Remembering some ancient Latin can only be impressive to an American.

It’s not every day that one gets to listen to a former British Prime Minister recite from memory the opening passages of The Iliad in Ancient Greek, with no notes, in response to a random question from an undergraduate—and all while wearing what appear to be Thomas The Tank Engine socks. But today was one such day.
My thanks to my good friend Brad LaMorgese for the opportunity to see the colorful and comic Boris Johnson speak tonight at the University of Dallas.
