Here's Cathy Stinear @StrokeScience to remind us that predicting outcome is hard and we shouldn't rely on initial impairment (especially in the more severe patients) - so think of tools like PREP2 #UKSF20 that can improve prediction accuracy

..... and if we add it to the positive/negative hemiplegic symptom story that John @blamlab discussed, then we have a framework that allows solid hypothesis generation in relation to motor recovery after stroke = progress #UKSF20

@dr_nickward really top draw stuff, I thought.

Thanks John @blamlab for clearly laying out the dissociable positive and negative symptoms of hemiplegia - each may need different therapeutic approaches #UKSF20

The winner of our Excellence in Public Engagement Award is Kate Ledingham for her work creating videos of discussions between stroke survivors, herself and Prof Cathy Price to understand the kind of feedback patients want to receive about their language recovery after stroke!

They all show that SSRIs on their own don’t work (we knew this from animal studies back in 1970s) but have not investigated SSRIs + rehab/training (which did work in animal studies back in 1970s) #readtheliterature there was no rationale for these big expensive RCTs
Dr Terry Quinn💙@DrTerryQuinn

Now, three well conducted RCTs show no functional benefit of SSRI following acute #stroke Could IPD identify potential subgroups who may benefit? #ESOWSO2020

Exactly - please can the stroke community take notice of these recent failures in trial design - mistakes of neural protection era are being repeated - pretty depressing to those of us interested in #strokerecovery

Yes absolutely.@PhysBobWood + The Neurofit team @npennyclinic and @helenvweaver have been so generous with information and mentoring: showing us how to simplify analysis and treatment in multiple planes of movement. Their kindness + willingness to share has been truely inspiring

Too often we see people failing when returning to work or their relationships unravelling post-stroke because of changes affecting their higher cognitive functions. Much more focus is required on sophisticated assessment and ecologically valid, effective interventions.
