Having never even heard of him, I read his Wikipedia page and that is an adjacency to the subject(s) depicted in that show most white people do not have.

Many other people during that period were doing the same thing.
Rick James precedes Prince and is literally doing just that. He was making "Punk funk" before Prince mixed New Wave into his music.
This doesn't touch any of the other artists who did this in the 70s as well.

@LonelEyeEyeEye Nah I cant agree with that. Prince was revolutionary. He was truly his own artist Yes he was influenced by others but those artists were also influenced by older artists. Prince was melding funk rock & soul. So many after him we're influence like D'Angelo, Miguel, Bruno Mars etc
