Well, all I’m saying is that the primary importance of free speech is NOT so that we can be offensive to others - that’s just an inevitable consequence of free speech. The importance of free speech is to prevent the opposite (controlled or limited or mandated speech) from happening. If that’s hard to grasp, maybe it’s an indication you’ve been seduced by the bright, shiny object of the right to offend people. It’s a chicken and egg question. Do we guarantee free speech first for the good it does and accept the occasional offenses to people second? Or do we guarantee the right to be offensive first, and enjoy the secondary benefit of preventing tyrants from abusing the population? Somehow I think the founding fathers had King George in mind when they put the First Amendment in the Constitution.

Free speech isn’t really about your right to say whatever you want, though free speech DOES allow that. Free speech is important because the alternative - controlled, prohibited, or mandatory speech - is the first step on a slippery slope. Controlled speech leads to controlled thoughts which lead to controlled beliefs which lead to controlled behavior. Authoritarians, dictators and tyrants want to control your behavior (because they are afraid of being lynched by annuncontrolled mob) so they begin by controlling your speech.

When I saw an influencer on Instagram talking about this I thought it had to be an exaggeration or distortion of the bill—an overly-simplified summary that missed some nuance in order to cast them as Disney villains. I read the bill. The Virginia Democrats *surgically* carved themselves (and ONLY themselves) out from their gun control measure. They are moving shamelessly without any pretense, like nothing I've ever seen before.
