Jesus didn’t say ‘on YOU I will build my church.’ He said ‘on this rock’—right after Peter confessed who He was. The rock isn’t Peter’s authority. The ROCK is Peter’s revelation from the previous verse which was the point of the conversation: that JESUS is the Christ, the Son of the living God and THAT knowledge is THE ROCK upon which the church will be built.

Peter never called himself the rock. Not once. Peter pointed to Jesus as the stone. Paul said Jesus is the only foundation. So no, the church is not built on Peter in some pope-chair, Rome-rules-the-world sense. Peter got a new name, yes. Peter got a new life, yes. Peter got a huge role, yes. But Jesus Christ is the foundation. Peter was just a servant standing on that foundation like everybody else. If Rome wants Peter to be the foundation, there’s a problem because: Peter kept preaching Jesus. Paul kept preaching Jesus. The Bible keeps preaching Jesus. That’s the church - Jesus. Period.

I get being a rock and I get being the leader of the disciples, but why didn’t he say “and upon YOU, I will build my church.” And why was there never another reference to it again? Why did Peter never once refer to himself as the rock? Why did he never tell any of the other disciples that HE was the rock upon which the church was built? Paul said Peter was a hypocrite and what Paul does say, very VERY clearly, is that “no one can lay any foundation other than… Jesus Christ,” and Paul also says the church is built on the foundation of “the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” Just wonder why it’s never mentioned at all in that context in any way shape or form or ever alluded to in metaphor while the theory itself is basically refuted by Peter himself. Strange.
