If the path to your ideal society depends on everyone agreeing to live by the rules of that society, what you have is a fantasy not a solution. The first question of social change must be how to accommodate those who don't support it.

@BamaSaltyMarine MREs are some of the most expensive ways to feed people. You notice that when there is any other choice the Army sets up some kind of mess hall to save money. Try advocating for soup kitchens next time.

If MREs are good enough for our troops, why not for welfare? What if EBT was replaced with monthly MRE deliveries, 8 cases per person. No misuse. No luxury. Just food. Needs met. Problem solved!

Most of the great artists in history were public employees.
Hey Zeús@HeyZeus

@simonmaechling A hypothetical PhD candidate has data that strongly suggests that a new blockbuster drug has undisclosed harmful side effects. In the wake of COVID does the electric screwdriver salesman believe that data will ever see the light of day?

@simonmaechling The suspicion is that somewhere between "collect data" and "publish papers" is "conform with preconceived notions" and "kowtow to government and corporate institutions." In other words the only people who get published have political reasons not to rock the boat.

Spend 20 years studying Chemistry. Collect data. Publish papers. Pass peer review. Earn a PhD. Go online. Get told you're wrong - by an electric screwdriver salesman. That's the internet. Expertise vs confidence. Science isn't broken. Our respect for it is.

@alz_zyd_ Life is different in California, but the last 5 years here have all been American takes on Japanese foods. Sushi has been here forever, but now there are Roman shops popping up left and right, and every fancy restaurant seems to be adding two or three Japanese dishes to the menu

Essentially 100% of internationally relevant food innovations since 2000 are American: avocado toast, smashburgers, craft beer, third wave coffee, etc. The only exceptions I can think of are natural wine and boba

Elon could literally solve homelessness tomorrow. All he needs to do is sell his stake in the companies he created from the ground up, crashing the price and evaporating his wealth as well as the savings and pensions of workers globally.. handing the control of these companies over to short term profit interests and preventing any long term vision from being enacted.. THEN take whatever money that remains which will be nowhere near 1tn and give it to homeless charities who have never solved homelessness anywhere on earth because they’re financially incentivised to do the opposite. Bam - homelessness solved. The reason he doesn’t do any of this is because he’s evil.

No wonder you think the United States is a shit hole you lived in Los Angeles. That’s the crappy part about being in one of the largest countries in the world. Everybody looks at the United States and thinks everything is just like NYC and LA. Newsflash for people visiting for the World Cup. The majority of the country is nothing like LA and NYC. Those are the parts of America that y’all hate and don’t worry, the rest of Americans hate those parts too. Hope this helps. 😎

Maybe this is a hot take but as someone who lived in the US for 4 years before moving home to Norway, I think the US is a great country to visit, not to live in. You get all the benefits of how grand the experiences are in culture, weather, nature, food, sports etc but you don’t have to worry about healthcare, overpaid housing, taxes that fund wars instead of your well-being and a lacking infrastructure. I understand it’s a big country and I only lived in Los Angeles (which is worse than most other American cities) but you only need one small medical issue to realize how messed up the system is. Also Trump.

Why are there so many (uninformed) people on here in the last week suddenly pointing to every piece of undeveloped land in the Bay Area and saying we should put dense housing there?? It looks like some sort of coordinated bot effort.

@Ryanrz Then charge tax on the number of bedrooms rather than assessed property value. That way we are actually taxing based on resourced consumed. I still thing there should be a tax penalty for bidding property prices way beyond what working people can afford, however.

I don’t understand this economy. Nursing homes are so expensive they bankrupt our grandparents, yet nursing home aides rely on food banks. Daycare costs so much it can consume an entire paycheck, yet daycare workers often need second jobs to survive. College leaves students buried in debt, while professors struggle to afford housing. Everything we need is astronomically expensive, and yet so little of what we pay seems to go to the people actually doing the work.

Elon just created 4,400 millionaires in a single day. 400 of them are now worth over $100 million. These aren't VCs. They're SpaceX employees, and the list includes welders, technicians, and cafeteria staff, because for two decades the company paid every level of the workforce in stock instead of higher salaries. Juan Hernandez immigrated from Mexico and took a $28 an hour contractor welding job in 2015. He says he didn't even know what SpaceX was. The company gave him a $10,000 equity grant and let him buy more shares through payroll deductions. That stake is now worth $880,000. Trevor Hise's parents wanted him to take a stable job at General Electric. He picked SpaceX instead, stayed 12 years, and accumulated over 100,000 shares. At the $135 listing price that's $13.5 million. He's 37 and semiretired. His words: "The magnitude of this has been ridiculous." The most telling detail came before the listing. Over 100 employees quietly banded together and negotiated a group wealth management deal covering up to $5 billion, because none of them had ever needed a wealth manager before. Software IPOs have minted millionaires for 30 years. This is the first one where the money went to the factory floor.

@dilanesper I want to clarify that I think at the end of the month the framework supposedly about to be signed will already have fallen apart. Israel will violate the ceasefire, Iran will retaliate in a way the US can't ignore and the whole cycle will start again. 10 days, 2 weeks tops.
