For the record, the president of the United States is now simultaneously claiming that he has won the war, is currently winning the war, needs help to win the war, and needs no help to win the war. All to destroy the nuclear program he claims to have already destroyed last year.

@crowningred Do these people realise that the King refusing royal assent for anything in 2026 would all but guarantee the end of the monarchy?

“The King should refuse royal assent to decriminalising abortion!” He … shouldn’t. Why would he when both Houses of Parliament have approved it and it seems to have majority support in the public? We aren’t a semi constitutional monarchy.

@flyinglawyer73 @Sheffiel1Antony @lewis_goodall You're nitpicking. The point is that Akrotiri and Dkehelia are BRITISH sovereign territory. They are not British military bases in Cyprus. Cyprus has no more authority over Akrotiri and Dkehelia than they do over Luxembourg.

@flyinglawyer73 @lewis_goodall If a Cypriot president is elected with a pledge to renegotiate that territory, to return it to the Republic, that should be respected by the British.

@Robintschek_CIA @ShinMarginalScr I am religious, yes, however I deliberately refrain from using religiously motivated arguments when debating AD because I agree that "my religion is against this" is not a good argument for whether it should be legalised.

A lot of anti-assisted dying people don’t do themselves any favours in this regard by repeatedly sharing moral panic stories from ‘pro life’ conservative Christian outlets to burnish their case against it. 🤷🏾‍♂️
Axio 🔶@axiochrono

It's so disgustingly dishonest that the pro-assisted dying people keep pretending that those of us who oppose it MUST be motivated by religious beliefs. Goes to show they don't have any actual counterpoints to the valid concerns disabled and vulnerable people have.

@ShinMarginalScr Listen man if you want to support euthanasia of the most vulnerable in our society I can't stop you. But it's not something I'm ever going to be okay with and I approve of every single measure taken to prevent it from being legalised.

@axiochrono People with Down’s do have the capacity to give informed consent for a variety of different things and are medically treated as such globally unless proven otherwise in specific cases. Source: I know a lot of people with Down’s.

@leap_dog See, I actually started out as being ambivalent and willing to learn more. What pushed me into being so fervently against it was the behaviour of the legislators trying to force it through. Every time Kim Leadbeater opens her mouth about this bill it gets worse.

@axiochrono it’s not relevant to any argument as to why you should support it. it’s just to me insane that a religious right propaganda campaign has been so incredibly effective at convincing people on this website and just this website

it makes me so mad at this point the bullshit people spout on assisted dying. how the fuck did the entire british liberal to left discourse become so insane while it still has such broad popular support. it’s maybe the most effective online religious right campaign of all time.

@ShinMarginalScr I'm going to get personal here and say I work with disabled people. That's my job. There is something deeply existentially horrifying about the notion that someone with Downs could give informed consent to AD. That was an incredibly reckless answer to give.

@axiochrono You have misquoted the committee and I know the exact source as well. It was an out of context clip where someone is asked whether people with Down’s Syndrome can consent and he said yes with the entire context being said person would be suffering from a terminal illness.

@ShinMarginalScr For the sake of clarity, what is your opinion on Leadbeater's committee trying to expand the eligibility criteria to people with Downs Syndrome? Do you think that should qualify someone for AD?

@axiochrono Like I don’t think you understand this but in jurisdictions like the Netherlands, the actual paperwork to get it approved is an absolute nightmare.

@axiochrono The bill as proposed literally is restricted to the terminally ill. What are you on about? I’d want to see it expanded, but that’s not what’s on the table?

@ShinMarginalScr Yeah that's how it always starts, and then the safeguards get loosened until vulnerable people are coerced into it. I mean, come on, Leadbeater's committee literally tried to get people with Downs Syndrome included in the eligibility criteria for AD!

@axiochrono The state doesn’t get to end their life, the patient chooses whether to die on their own terms or not. They may choose not to and many don’t. Massive difference between this and capital punishment.

I empathise with terminally ill people who want AD in order to have a peaceful end, I really do, but unfortunately I do not believe their rights outweigh the rights of everyone else who will be caught in the crossfire by normalising this. If the right to die depends on coercion of vulnerable and disabled people, then there simply cannot be a right to die.

@axiochrono Like if you have terminal cancer and you are given 6 months to live, it doesn’t mean you will 100% die in 6 months just that it’s more likely than not and I’m sorry but if you thought about it for more than 2 seconds you’d realise the cruelty you’re proposing here.
