This Women’s Month, Uganda’s digital future isn’t just being celebrated; it's being built. Hon. @DrMusenero, Minister for Science, Technology & Innovation, and Dr. @azawedde, Permanent Secretary of the @MoICT_Ug, have launched an operational roadmap to turn digital connectivity into real economic value. Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza explains the vision: “For too long, Uganda grew the coffee, but someone else sold the jar. We are building the factory, training the workforce, and keeping the profit inside Uganda. That is not a vision. That is a construction site.” Dr. Aminah Zawedde adds, "Digital skills are not a welfare program. Every young Ugandan we train is a unit of economic capacity, building products, running enterprises, employing others, and keeping value circulating in our economy.” The roadmap is live, connecting universities, innovation labs, manufacturing, and enterprise. This morning, @MoICT_Ug received a courtesy visit from the Equal Opportunities Commission (@EOC_UG ) team to discuss key issues affecting access, affordability, and inclusion in Uganda’s digital space. The engagement focused on citizen concerns, including internet access and cost, connectivity gaps, digital inclusion for persons with disabilities, online safety, and civic education. PS Dr. @azawedde highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry to expand regional ICT hubs, improve connectivity, and strengthen measures to address harmful online content. She also highlighted the importance of inclusive digital services, noting progress in supporting persons with visual impairments at the National ICT Innovation Hub through assistive technologies and targeted training programmes, with plans to scale these efforts nationwide. #DigitalUganda

Today, we hosted 130 students from @UCUniversity pursuing Computer Science, Information Technology, and Data Science for a student pitching session. The students took to the floor, pitching innovative technology ideas to a panel of external judges and walking away with the kind of feedback that turns good ideas into great ones. Beyond the pitches, the session also gave them a front-row seat to the innovation ecosystem and a tour of the Innovation Hub, where they interacted with different innovators.

Yesterday, we hosted our colleagues and partners from both the government and the private sector for an Iftar dinner. It was an evening of reflection, gratitude, and togetherness, which reminded us of the unity, compassion, and understanding that Ramadan inspires. As we enter the final 10 days of Ramadan, I encourage everyone to continue embracing patience, humility, and unity. While fasting challenges us physically, it also fills us with spiritual energy that strengthens our service to the nation. Let us carry the values of Ramadan into our workplaces, supporting one another, practicing forgiveness, and striving to be better citizens. Today marked the successful conclusion of Batch 3 of the UJ-CONNECT Entrepreneurship Mentorship Programme, where eight innovative founders from Uganda’s tech ecosystem showcased impactful IT solutions addressing challenges in the education, health, agriculture, and insurance sectors. Following competitive pitches, four entrepreneurs were awarded Proof of Concept cash prizes to support the scaling of their innovations: $5,000 – Essymart Africa $4,000 – Microvest (U) Ltd $3,000 – Ticketyo Technologies Ltd $2,000 – Twahirah Islamic Center #DigitalUganda

Speaking after the keynote speech this morning was a challenging but powerful experience. I have not been challenged in a long time, but today’s keynote brought the message home in a way that was both profound and insightful. I want to start by acknowledging that Arshad captured our government priorities perfectly, he knows our strategies like the back of his hand, and there was no new message for me to bring. However, listening to his informed perspective allowed everyone present, including Uganda Development Bank (UDB), to better decipher the strategic steps needed to move forward. This forum, which I am now calling an annual platform, provides an opportunity for stakeholders to invest and implement initiatives from a well-informed and data-driven perspective, ensuring clarity and purpose in how we achieve national growth. While we talk about tenfold growth, it is critical to emphasize that growth is not just about numbers; it must be quality and sustainable. Anchoring Uganda’s growth on ATMs, agro-industrialization, tourism, mineral development, science, technology and innovation, and the creative industry ensures that we are purposeful in our approach. Each of these areas is supported by ICT, reinforcing that our growth strategy is informed by data and technology. As we move forward, Uganda Development Bank (UDB) has a key role in identifying the projects that align with this strategy, ensuring that the investments made are not just consumptive but truly productive and sustainable. Technology sovereignty is central to our national strategy, and the Buy Uganda, Build Uganda policy is designed to protect our young innovators and promote solutions that are homegrown. By prioritizing local technology, we ensure that challenges such as traffic management and e-waste handling become opportunities for innovation and practical solutions. Uganda Development Bank (UDB) has the opportunity to guide the financing of projects that support this intentional growth, ensuring that we are building systems that are designed for the Ugandan context. We must move away from a lamentation mentality and recognize that these challenges are in fact entry points for creative problem-solving that drives economic development, local empowerment, and sustainable industry growth.
