That exchange said everything. A reporter asked a basic factual question: how does someone cross multiple state lines with multiple weapons and still end up in DC? And instead of answering, he immediately ran for the usual script about “not changing the law.” That is the tell. When officials dodge the logistics and retreat into slogans, it usually means the real answer is politically inconvenient.

Sincere question: do Trump supporters who genuinely want to reduce political violence actually think that lobbing transparently hypocritical accusations about the left's rhetoric is in any way effective? Are we really gonna go through another cycle where MAGA folks point out incendiary rhetoric on the left without ever acknowledging that some of the most violent and incendiary rhetoric in America comes from the President and his supporters? Do you not think the rest of the country has eyes and ears? It's truly awful that President Trump has been the target of political violence. It's also truly awful how he's frequently talked about his political opponents: accusing them of treason, amplifying calls for their execution, publicly celebrating their death, calling them scum, garbage, vermin, animals. It was like 3 weeks ago that he threatened the annihilation of an entire civilization! It was just a few months ago that he and his White House knowingly smeared two Americans who'd been killed by federal agents as domestic terrorists! I hate political violence. I hate what happened last night. Probably 99% of Americans agree. But let's not insult everyone's intelligence by pretending that the most powerful person in the world isn't a huge part of the problem here.

@NRSmaine @aPocemuchka They could and routinely clear hotel rooms, entire floors for security reasons. Obvious there were security issues that a ballroom won’t solve. People still need to get in and out of the venue.

@balmig @aPocemuchka America has privacy laws - they could sweep the hallways, but likely not the private rooms of hotel guests. Not without probable cause, and a warrant.

the shooter did not drone or bomb the white house, he walked in with a gun because some genius decided there shouldn't be metal detectors and pat downs, or other basic measures.

We were there front and center. That venue wasn’t built to accommodate an event with the line of succession for the U.S. government. After witnessing last night, drop the TDS and build the White House ballroom for events exactly like these.

Are you talking about tonight's incident at the Correspondent's dinner? There were checkpoints and security measures at the hotel, outside the ballroom. The deranged assassin was a guest at the hotel, and reportedly assembled the weapon in a room off to the side, where bar carts were parked. He'd apparently stashed the weapon in that outside room earlier.
